The London Towne reading and language arts program is a multifaceted one. Headed by Mrs. Tania Dedham, Jessica Howell and Mary Alice Soller, the Reading Resource Teachers, the program includes instruction in remedial, on grade level and enrichment reading to all of the children at London Towne. It also includes instruction in writing, spelling, listening and speaking.

Both phonemic awareness and phonics are part of our K - 2 curriculum. First and second grade students are assessed continually throughout the year to track reading ability, skill acquisition andcomprehension. Students who are not on grade level receive remedial instruction during first and second grade.

Reading and writing in grades 3-6 are often done through a workshop approach.Using the FCPS Program of Studies (POS), upper grade teachers emphasize reading in the content areas of social studies, science and math. Students meet in literature circles to discuss a variety of genre from Civil War books to mysteries. Some focus objectives include reading and writing for an audience, use of library, technology and theme reading and writing across the curriculum.

While reading and writing is a featured part of all parent shares and most other curriculum activities, the highlight of the year for language arts is Imagination Celebration. All students have on display at least one book that they have published. Parents are encouraged to attend this evening event and have their children share that book with them. Other programs, such as 1st grade Power Reading, Kindergarten Read In, and 6th grade Author's Day will continue.
