Program

Here at London Towne, students have the opportunity to learn curriculum in Spanish, through our 2-way immersion program. Students in the program spend half the day learning grade level math science and health in Spanish along with Spanish language development that is taught through the content areas. They then receive instruction in English for English language arts and social studies during the other half of the day.

The program begins with a 2-way Kindergarten program. Each class has about 22 students and care is taken to ensure that half of the students are Spanish speakers and half are English speakers. Both groups serve as models for their peers when they are learning in the English or the Spanish classes. The Spanish Language Arts goal for kindergarten is to establish oral and auditory proficiency in Spanish. The math, science and health goals are to meet all FCPS objectives for Kindergarten.

The subjects that are taught in Spanish are science, math and health. These subjects were chosen for the elementary two-way immersion program because they are the most conductive to the acquisition of a second language becasue they are hands-on, active and manipulative based. The daily connection between activity and language is the key.

The grade level Spanish immersion and English teachers at London Towne work together as a team to ensure that all FCPS objectives are achieved.

The primary goal of the immersion program is to have all students succeed in all academic areas while learning a foreign language. Students also develop communications skills, multicultural awareness and global perspective while succeeding academically.

The immersion program at our school has been implemented since fall of 1992 and we presently have many students enrolled in it. Our students are transitioned into a foreign language program at the middle school level in which they continue developing proficiency in the foreign language.
