Welcome to Second Grade

2008-2009

Dear Families,

Congratulations on a successful year and welcome to second grade! The second grade year is one of many changes. The children will gain more independence and improve organizational skills. They will actively pursue a variety of learning experiences that require your support and encouragement at home.

The curriculum expands on previous skills and presents new skills. The children will use a variety of strategies to aid comprehension while improving independent reading. They will develop fluency and compare components of text such as setting and characterization. They will use the writing process to write for different purposes using a variety of forms. More focus will be applied to the use of spelling strategies and standard writing conventions in daily work.

In math, the children will build upon first grade skills and acquire a

greater proficiency in addition and subtraction facts. Some units of high interest in Social Studies and Science include explorers, Native Americans Indians, crickets, and animals’ habitats.

A supply list is enclosed. Supplies should be sent to school on the first day, but additional supplies may be requested by individual teachers.

We look forward to meeting you and your child. We welcome parents as partners in education and hope that you will be involved in the many learning experiences provided next year. Your support is an essential element in your child’s progress, and we look forward to working with you to ensure that your child succeeds in the second grade!

Sincerely,

The Second Grade Team
