Candy Math
Buy an inexpensive bag of mixed candies to practice math skills. Have your child:
Staple together some pices of paper and go on a walk with your child, looking for patterns. When you find them, have your child record them by drawing them in the book. Finding patterns is an important part of mathematics and logical thinking. Patterns can be colors, shapes, designs, numbers, sizes, and so on. Encourage your child to look also for patterns that are not lined up in rows, such as patterns on hubcaps, sneaker soles, and clothing.
This is a good time to have your child help you prepare some simple recipes such as jello, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, chocolate milk or milk shakes. you can develop math skills by discussing what ingredients are needed and the necessary steps and their order. Have your child tell you what s/he thinks and why, rather than simply tell your child what is needed. Taking this time allows your child to sharpen reasoning skills and to develop important mathematical language.
