Lemon Road Elementary School

What a neat little school.” That is often the comment heard as visitors leave Lemon Road Elementary School. Lemon Road Elementary is located in a part of Fairfax County that is rich in historical importance dating back to the early days of the colonies. It is located adjacent to Leesburg Pike, one of the oldest highways in North America. When Lemon Road opened on January 6, 1956, it was basically a "walking school." It is a small neighborhood school (the smallest in Fairfax County) that is flourishing because of its little red schoolhouse charm. Building on that tradition and applying current research, our staff members are committed to implementing a child-centered curriculum utilizing a continuous progress instructional model to foster student achievement.

We are a Success by Eight school with full-day kindergarten with four kindergarten-grade one multiage classes. We use an experiential approach that recognizes that students learn by doing, as well as by hearing and seeing. We have a looping strategy in the second and third grades. Our second grade teachers move up or “loop” with their students to third grade. Our fourth graders are the only stand-alone grade. We use this year to make the adjustment to upper elementary, and we focus on organization and study skills. Our fifth grade teachers loop with their students to sixth grade.

Differentiation of Instruction has been a school focus as we strive to meet the instructional needs of a very diverse population. Our staff regularly participates in staff development activities to ensure the successful implementation of this approach across the curriculum. One of our goals is that our students be comfortable using the technology available to support their learning experiences. To this end, we have a state of the art computer lab with a full-time technology teacher and each classroom has several multimedia computers for student use.

Lemon Road school staff, families and community work together as a team to nurture our students as they develop life skills that will prepare them to compete successfully in a complex global world and to be productive members of society.
