Teacher Resources

Many things will be taught during this school year in English/Language Arts and Mathematics, but the standards listed below constitute a summary of the most important concepts your child will be expected to master in Kindergarten.

English/Language Arts

Oral Language

K.2 The student will use listening and speaking vocabularies.

 f) Follow one- and two- step directions.

K.3      The student will build oral communication skills.

b) Express ideas and needs in complete sentences.

K.4      The student will hear, say and manipulate phonemes of a spoken language.

a) Identify orally words that rhyme.

b) Identify words orally according to shared beginning and ending sounds.

c) Blend sounds orally to make words or syllables.

d) Divide one-syllable words into sounds.

Reading

K.5  The student will understand how print is organized.

a) Hold printed materials in the correct position.

b) Identify front and back cover and title page.

c/d) Follow words from left to right and top to bottom matching voice with print.

K.6      The student will demonstrate an understanding that print makes sense.

d) Read and explain own writing and drawing.

K.7/K.9 The student will develop an understanding of basic phonetic principles.

a/b) Name and print upper and lower case letters and identify consonant and short vowel sounds.

Writing 

K.11    The student will write to communicate ideas.

a) Draw pictures and/or print letters and phonetically spelled words to write about experiences, stories, people objects or events.

b) Write left to right and top to bottom.

MATHEMATICS

Number and Number Sense

The student will apply knowledge of how the numbers 0 through 6 related to 5.         

K.2/K.5  The student, given a set containing 10 or fewer concrete items, will            be able to count, select, and write the numerals, and count up to 30, and backfrom 10.

Computation and Estimation

K.6  The student will add and subtract whole numbers, using up to 10 items. up10   

Measurement

K.7  The student will recognize a penny, nickel, dime and quarter.

Geometry

K.11  The student will identify, describe and draw two-dimensional                  (plane) geometric figures.

Probability and Statistics

K.14/K.15 The student will gather data relating to familiar experiences by           counting and tallying.

K.16 The student will investigate and describe the results of dropping a two-colored counter or using a multicolored spinner.

Patterns, Functions, and Algebra

K.17 The student will sort and classify objects according to similar                    attributes (size, color, shape, etc.)
