Many things will be taught during this school year in English/Language Arts and Mathematics, but the standards listed below constitute a summary of the most important concepts your child will be expected to master in second grade.

ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS

Oral Language

2.2    The student will continue to expand listening and speaking             vocabularies.

b)  Clarify and explain words and ideas orally

c)   Follow oral directions with 3 and 4 steps 

2.3    The student will expand oral communication skills.

c)  Participate in a group (leader/participant)

d)  Summarize information heard orally

Reading

2.4   The student will use phonetic strategies when reading and spelling.

a)  Use knowledge of consonants, blends and digraphs

b)  Use knowledge of short, long and r-controlled vowel patterns

c)  Decode and spell regular multisyllabic words

2.5 The student will use meaning clues and language structure when reading.

c) Use knowlege of story structure and sequence.

  2.7   The student will read fiction and nonfiction using a variety of strategies  independently.

a)  Preview the selection using pictures, diagrams, titles and headings

d)  Reread and self correct when necessary

2.8   The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of fiction and nonfiction.

a)  Make predictions

e)  Locate information to answer questions

f/g) Describe characters, setting, problem, solution, and main ideas

Writing

2.11  The student will write stories, letters and simple explanations.

a) Use a variety of pre-writing strategies

b) Organize writing to include beginning, middle, end

c)  Revise writing for clarity

2.12  The student will edit for correct grammar, capitalization, punctuation and  spelling.

a)  Recognize and use complete sentences (subject and predicate)

b)  Use and punctuate declarative, interrogative and exclamatory                     sentences

f)  Use correct spelling for high-frequency sight words, including                      compound words and regular plurals

MATHEMATICS

Number and Number Sense

2.1  The students will read, write and identify the place value of each digit in   a three-digit numeral, using numeration models.

2.3  The students will identify the ordinal positions first through twentieth, using an ordered set of objects.

Computation and Estimation

2.6   The students will recall basic addition facts- i.e. sums to 18 or less-and the corresponding subtraction facts.

2.7 The students will estimate and find the sum or difference of two whole numbers 99 or less with various methods of computation

Measurement

2.11  The students will count and compare a collection of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters up to $2.00 using correct symbols.

2.12 The students will estimate and then use a ruler to make linear measurements to the nearest centimeter and inch.

Geometry

2.20/2.22 The students will identify, describe, compare and contrast 3-D concrete figures (ex. Cube, prism, etc.)

2.21   The students identify and create figures using various concrete materials along a line of symmetry.

Probability and Statistics

2.23   The students will read, construct, label, and interpret a bar graph.

2.26   The students will create and solve story problems using numerical sentences involving the basic facts for addition and subtraction.
