FMS Rising Seventh Grade Students                     Summer Reading Project – Book Quilt      
open bookSelect and read a fiction or nonfiction book you have not read before nor had read to you.  The book you use for this assignment may not be one which has been made into a movie.
open bookThe FCPS Summer Reading List will provide interesting book suggestions, but you may also read books not listed there.  The computer link for the FCPS list is as follows:

open bookComplete a “book quilt square” using these directions and the example on the back.
 
1. Begin with a piece of construction paper measuring 12” X 12”.
2. Draw nine equal squares (each will be a 4” square).
3. Write or type the title and author’s name in the center square
4. In the four corner squares, illustrate each of the following (but leave room for a paragraph underneath – see #5):
For a fiction book:                  character(s),
setting,
conflict,
important plot event or symbol

For a nonfiction book:           topic summary,
author biography,
an important event or fact,
intended audience (Who would enjoy this book most?)

5. Under each of the four drawings/illustrations, write or type a short, well-constructed paragraph to explain important information about each.
6. Decorate four remaining squares with an artistic design fitting the book’s topic or theme.
7. Use correct conventions including spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

Grading:  Your reading project will be scored according to the following:

Content:  Each well-constructed paragraph includes carefully edited details to explain the
book’s components.                                                                                                                 7 pts.

Conventions:  Few errors in grammar, spelling, or mechanics can be found.                                2 pts.

Presentation:  Assignment is completed according to guidelines and is neat and appealing.        1 pt.
