For students who are eligible for special services, the department provides educational opportunities appropriate to students’ abilities, accommodating individual differences by adapting materials and varying the delivery of instruction within the FCPS Program of Studies. The Special Education program offers many courses for special needs students.

Basic Skills classes provide supplementary, individual, and small group instructions for students who have the majority or all of their courses in the mainstream. Teamed classes are mainstream courses taught by a content area teacher and a special education teacher. Self-contained classes are provided for those who need intensive instruction in basic academic skills.

The program for students having emotional disabilities emphasizes understanding the causes of behaviors and developing a positive, trusting relationship between adult and student in a well-structured educational environment. The traditional role of the teacher has been expanded to include educational intervention in emotional and behavioral areas. Parent cooperation and collaboration are vital to the students’ success in the program.
