Physical Education Policies

CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS:
All students must successfully complete two years of Physical Education for graduation. This requires a high school student to demonstrate proficiency in one individual/dual sport and competency in at least two other team sports or activities.

Freshmen are required to complete three quarters of activity and one quarter of Health Education. This includes a unit in A.T.O.D. (Alcohol, Tobacco, & other drugs), Environmental Health, Nutrition and a unit in Adult CPR

Sophomores are required to complete two quarters of activity, one quarter of Health (Family Life Education) and one quarter of Driver Education.

Students are expected to dress in uniform & participate unless limitations are specifically outlined by a doctor.

OBJECTIVES:
To help each student improve his/her physical fitness through a variety of fitness and conditioning activities.

To assist in the development of cooperation and understanding of sportsmanship.

To provide a program for the temporarily and permanently physically challenged students, which gives the student an understanding of his/her limitations and emphasizing his/her potential.

To provide each ninth and tenth grade student with instruction in both health education and driver education that can lead to lifetime skills.

General Expectations:

Each student is expected to:

  • Take responsibility for their own learning
  • Be an active participant in all activities
  • Wear the appropriate uniform
  • Treat classmates with respect and consideration
  • Follow all classroom rules so that the learning experience is positive

Fairfax County Grading Scale:
A = 100-94 B+ = 93-90 B = 89-84 C+ = 83-80
C = 79-74 D+ = 73-70 D = 69-64 F = 63 & Below

Although report card grades appear as letters, we will use numerical grades each nine weeks. Each student is encouraged to talk with his/her instructor concerning the numerical grade.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES/TARDIES: Consistent with Lee High School policy, three (3) unexcused absences constitutes automatic failure for the quarter. Two (2) unexcused tardies will equal one (1) unexcused absence.

CLASS EXCUSES:
A note from the parent/guardian or family doctor is required to excuse a student from any class participation.
The note should state the date, name of student, the condition limiting his/her participation and the activity. Students with written excuses limiting physical activities will be required to dress out. Notes must be brought the day of the non-participation. Students will not be excused after the fact. If the student is too ill to participate, they should notify the teacher and the teacher will send the student to the clinic. If a student is to be excused more than three (3) days in succession, a doctor’s referral is to state what activities the student cannot participate in. Students with a temporary or permanent medical problem that will require selected activities should obtain an adapted physical education form from the guidance counselor.

UNIFORMS:
Uniforms are required for students in Physical Education 9 and 10, and all weight training classes. Only the PE uniform is acceptable, no other Lancer clothing. Five non-dresses in a quarter will constitute an automatic failure!

Jewelry is especially dangerous during activities and presents opportunities for theft, if removed during class. It is the student's responsibility to secure their clothing and other items in a locker with a lock. Students are not permitted to share lockers for security purposes. Key locks are not acceptable!!
