Safety and Security

Introduction

The Lee High School Security Department is comprised of Security Specialist Keith Walker and Security Assistants Grant Hodges, Robert Smith, and Brian McAndrew. In addition we have Fairfax County Police officer Iva Robertson assigned as our School Resource Officer. Our primary responsibility is promoting the safety and welfare of the students and staff at Lee High School as well as ensuring the physical safety of the building and grounds. We work closely with our students, teachers and community to provide the highest degree of security with the least impact on the learning environment.

Personal Property at School

Fairfax County Public Schools does not assume responsibility for the personal property of students and does not purchase insurance for their property. Students and their parents are urged, therefore, to carefully consider the types and value of property that students take to school. Items of significant monetary or sentimental value are strongly discouraged, including cell phones, CD players, IPOD’s etc. and certain types of apparel and jewelry. With regard to items that are relevant to the instructional program and that students take to school to share with a class, parents and students should give consideration to the value of the property relative to the limited storage and security that is available in schools. This is not intended to discourage the sharing of materials that enhance the instructional program but to urge appropriate consideration of what is taken to school. The same consideration should be given to personal property brought to extracurricular activities, including musical instruments. Student use of any storage area provided by the school division is on a voluntary basis; there is no requirement to use any storage areas. Students who choose to use locker storage, or any storage area that can be locked, shall be responsible for the security of any associated keys or combinations.

Please give careful consideration to the above suggestions. Together with your cooperation and our determination we can further our goal to provide your students with a safe and secure environment.

Staying After Normal School Hours

Students who choose to stay at school after normal school hours must have a legitimate reason to do so. Students staying after for academic reasons should be with a teacher by 2:15 and leave the building when finished. Our Wednesday late buses arrive at 4:30. If you finish with your teacher before the late bus arrives, you should wait in the lobby until arrival. Students involved in extra-curricular activities are discouraged from staying after school waiting for that event. When time permits, students should go home and come back at a reasonable time before that event. In the case of practices in which students have to stay at school, coaches are required to supervise their athletes prior to their assigned practices. Each coach should have a designated area for their athletes to go prior to practice.

Parking Procedures

All vehicles parked on school grounds are required to display a permit beginning the first day of school.  If you plan to park on school grounds the first day of school, you need to purchase your permit before school starts. Student parking permits will be on sale beginning Wednesday, August 28th at 1:00PM in the Security Office.  For those who can’t make that date, I will be selling permits in the Security Office at 2:15PM daily for the first week of school, but please remember that you cannot park on school grounds without a permit. Permit applications WILL NOT be accepted through the mail. You need to fill out an Application For Use Of Private Automobile and a LHS Student Parking Agreement.  If both are not completed and signed, a permit will not be issued. Both are available in the Main Office or are downloadable here.  Bring both forms and a check for $200 made out to Lee HS.
Attendance at school is critical – all periods on time, every day. With this in mind, we are putting in place some new criteria this year in order to receive and maintain the privilege to park on school grounds.  When applying, please keep this in mind:

  • Parking on school grounds is a privilege.  Failure to obey FCPS and LHS rules will result in loss of parking privileges and the cost of the permit will not be refunded.
  • Students who meet any of the following criteria during the prior quarter will risk losing their parking permit and parking privilege. For example, in determining whether a student is eligible to park next fall, we will look at 4th quarter of the current school year. Students WILL NOT be eligible to purchase a permit if any one or more of the following conditions exist:
  • 7 or more unexcused class tardies
  • 3 or more unexcused isolated class period absences
  • 1 full day of unexcused absence
  • More than 1 incident of leaving school grounds without permission
  • Students who are ineligible to purchase a permit during the 1st quarter may purchase a permit at the start of the 2nd quarter, provided they do not meet any of the above criteria during the 1st quarter of the 2013-2014 school year.  This does not apply if permits are sold out before the end of the 1st quarter.
  • Sophomores will not be eligible to purchase parking permits at any point during the 2013-2014 school year unless they are pupil placed AND have already obtained their VA Driver’s License.
  • The cost for a student parking permit decreases by $50 every grading period.
  • Parking permit fees for students receiving free/reduced lunch are as follows:
  • Reduced Fee – 1st Quarter/$100; 2nd Quarter/$75; 3rd Quarter/$50; 4th Quarter/$25
  • Free Fee - $20 throughout the entire school year
  • All financial obligations must be satisfied before a parking permit will be issued.  THIS INCLUDES ALL PAST DUE PARKING FINES and OTHER DEBTS, INCLUDING THOSE FROM PREVIOUS YEARS.  If you owe money for a parking fine, you must pay your fine (if paying by check, the check must clear) before you can receive your permit.

Any questions regarding this procedure may be directed Keith Walker, Safety and Security Specialist, at kwalker@fcps.edu or 703-924-8318 after August 26th 2013.

Lost and Found

Lost and found articles are eventually secured in Rm 188. If you lose something, check at the main office, with the security department, and with the custodians prior to checking in the Rm 188. At the end of each semester, unclaimed articles are given to charity.

Leaving School Grounds

Leaving school grounds during school hours without permission is forbidden. Drivers can lose their parking privileges for an extended period of time and passengers can be referred to their Principal for discipline. All students must check out through attendance. The parking lot is “off limits” during school hours without a pass.

Locker Security

Lockers are the property of the Fairfax County Public School System. Used properly, our lockers are secure. Students who use our lockers are responsible for safeguarding their property. Lockers or combinations should not be shared. Students should make sure the door is properly closed and latched. Any theft should be reported immediately to the security department.

Visitor Policy

All visitors during the school day must check in at the main office. All legitimate visitors are required to show a picture I.D., and sign in through the Visitor Management System. Visitors are required to wear a visitor pass while in the building. All visitors during the school day must have a legitimate reason before access to the building will be allowed. Past students, siblings, friends, etc. will not be given access to the building during school hours.
