The Foreign Language Department strives to develop students’ cultural awareness through language study and cultural activities. The skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are taught, with emphasis on oral proficiency and practical aspects of language use. Classroom activities range from the conventional to the more innovative, including: partner and group conversational activities; instructional games and videos; journaling; sampling of traditional foods; dance; writing and video-taping of original skits; writing and revising of written work using the word processor; working with interactive computer software and the Internet. Evaluation includes informal daily assessment of homework and oral class participation, traditional quizzes and tests, written and oral proficiency tests (PALS), and individual or group projects.
Language clubs and/or honor societies exist for each language taught at Lee. These groups work both independently and cooperatively to promote the study of languages and the appreciation of their respective cultures at Lee. Cultural activities such as multi-cultural Mardi Gras celebrations, the observance of Foreign Language Week, and the French Café involve language students and the larger school community in a dynamic way.
We invite you to look over our course offerings and consider learning another language. Knowledge of a foreign language is a practical, marketable skill. Also, as we begin to appreciate different cultures, we have the potential to appreciate our own more fully as well!
The Lee High School Foreign Language Department offers five foreign languages and has a strong IB upper-level program in French, German and Spanish. The specific courses offered by the Foreign Language Department are:
