  Art Club  
 
The Art Club is an opportunity for 6th grade students to meet weekly on Thursdays after school to work on various art projects. The 25 members submit an application with ideas for projects they wish to create. Mrs. Jaranson, Art Teacher, provides materials, demonstrates and offers her expertise to students working with paint, clay, stitchery, drawing, collage, and sculpture. There are critiques and group sharing. Projects are displayed at a student/staff exhition in June.

  Band  
 
Free instruction on band instruments is being offered to all interested 5th and 6th graders by our Band Director, Mr. Layland.  Weekly group lessons are scheduled during regular school hours.  Every effort is made by music specialists and classroom teachers to minimize the disruption of regular classroom studies.  Classes are offered for both beginning and experienced band students.  Advanced band students also have the opportunity to perform in the district solo/ensemble festival and participate in Robinson Area Band.

  Chess Club  
 
The Chess Club is a PTA sponsored activity that offers an opportunity to play chess and learn more about the game and to experience tournament play with area schools and among other Laurel Ridge students.  Membership is limited to 65 Laurel Ridge students in the 2nd-6th grades.  Students meet on Friday afternoons from 3:30-4:15PM in the cafeteria.

  Chorus  
 
Fifth and Sixth grade students have the opportunity to participate in the Laurel Ridge Chorus with our music teachers, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Stowe.  Students meet during school hours on Friday afternoons and rehearse for the Winter and Spring concerts.  Selected 6th grade students participate in the All County Chorus program in the Spring.

  Girls on the Run  
 
Girls on the Run® is a life-changing, experiential learning program for girls in grades 3-5.  The program combines training for a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts.  The goals of the program are to encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development.  Girls on the Run meets in groups of 20 participants, twice weekly for a one-hour session to prepare for and compete in a 3.1 mile running event.

  Lightning Lions  
 
The Lightning Lions is a 40 member jump rope team who performs at basketball half times and nursing homes all over Fairfax County.  Tryouts are held in the fall for boys and girls in grades 4-6.  Tryouts are held to determine a commitment to jump roping, but it is not a selective process.  Practices are held every morning from 7:50-8:30AM in the Laurel Ridge gym.

  ORFF Club  
 
The Orff Club (named for Carl Orff, a German musician/teacher, composer) is offered to students in grades 4-6. Students meet with Mrs. Smith, Music Teacher, before school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Carl Orff's method of learning music through singing, dancing and moving is explored, as students work their way toward a year end performance.

  Safety Patrols  
 
Safety Patrols play a vital role in daily life at Laurel Ridge, helping to keep the school a safer place for everyone.  Over sixty 5th and 6th grade students are selected by our Patrol Sponsors, Mr. Krum and Mrs. Jones , and assigned to positions within and outside of the school building, on school buses, and at school crossings.  They also assist kindergarteners to and from class each day, raise and lower the flags, and make the afternoon announcements.

  Strings  
 
The string orchestra program is offered to students in grades 4, 5, and 6 by Strings Instructor Mr. McKay.  Class instruction is offered as one 45 minute class session per week on:  violin, viola, cello and double bass.  Second and third year students may also have the opportunity to play in an ensemble called area orchestra which meets Monday afternoons at another school location.

  Student Council Association (SCA)  
 

The SCA is Laurel Ridge's Student Government. The Laurel Ridge SCA is led by five officers, 5th and 6th grade committee chairpersons and is supervised by Mrs. Counts and Mrs. Kelley. There is also a representative from each third and fourth grade classroom. The SCA is a leadership and service organization which conducts service projects and promotes school spirit through leadership projects. The SCA meets once a month to plan and work on these projects.

SCA students are selected through an election process. The officers and committee chairs are all fifth and sixth grade students who entered the election by application and campaigned for a position. The classroom representatives are third and fourth grade students and can apply for the position in their classroom during their classroom election.

  WLRS  
 
WLRS ("Window on Laurel Ridge School") is the morning news program at Laurel Ridge.  It airs every day on our closed-circuit channel 6 at 8:55 AM.  Sixth graders apply for positions on WLRS and new crew and cast members are selected each grading period by WLRS advisor, Mrs. Steen.  The crew members operate the camera and the computer as well as the audio mixer and the digital video mixer.  There is a director who is in charge of the production.  News anchors lead the pledge, announce the lunch, discuss the weather, wish happy birthdays and read any announcements.  There is also a “Joke of the Day” and a “Hero of the Week” segment.  Sometimes there are special announcements made by the administration or other Laurel Ridge staff members.  WLRS is a great way to start the day at Laurel Ridge!
