The Reading Connection at Lanier

Michele Johnson, Reading Specialist

The reading program at Lanier focuses on helping students to develop and grow into independent, discriminating readers and learners. Reading is a crucial skill that connects students to meeting the challenges of the 21st century successfully and enables them to become responsible, literate citizens.

Reading is a tool that spans disciplines and is integrated into all content areas. The reading program at Lanier is not a reading class- it is the Lanier community’s commitment to literacy. Staff members recognize that developing adolescent literacy is just as important and requires as much time and effort as teaching beginning readers.

To support the reading/literacy program, Lanier has adopted S.T.A.R.T. (Strategies To Activate Reading and Thinking). S.T.A.R.T. posters appear in all classrooms to emphasize the skills that active readers use Before, During and After Reading. A copy of the poster may be viewed on this web page.

The Lanier community is committed to fostering active reading skills and promoting literacy for all students.

Strategies To Activate Reading and Thinking

Before Reading active readers ask:

What will this be about?

What do I already know about this topic?

Active readers will:

  • Preview/Survey
  • Connect to Prior Knowledge
  • Question
  • Predict
  • Set Purpose

During Reading active readers ask:

Does this make sense?

How does this connect to what I already know?

Active readers will:

  • Reread
  • Use Context Clues
  • Analyze Unfamiliar Words
  • Self-monitor
  • Confirm/Revise Predictions

After Reading active readers ask:

What did I learn?

What can I do with what I learned?

Active readers will:

  • Review/Reflect
  • Summarize
  • Organize
  • Evaluate/Make Connections
