This specialized program enables students to learn business organization as well as operation skills and techniques in a realistic business setting. Traditional classroom instruction in marketing, merchandising, and management is enhanced by the opportunity for students to meet and work with professionals in the mall businesses. Students have the opportunity to expand their knowledge of marketing from a management perspective. This course focuses on areas to include: ethics, consumer and environmental protection, economics, career development, entrepreneurship, professional sales, marketing-information-management, product planning, pricing, promotion, purchasing, distribution, finance, and the development of a business plan. Students attend their base schools for regular classes and then travel to Springfield, Fair Oaks, or Tysons Corner Center shopping malls for both classroom instruction and related on-the-job training. The student-operated Santa's Little Helpers store at Springfield Mall and the Holiday Gift Wrap Center at Fair Oaks Mall offer additional opportunities for real-life entrepreneurial experiences. Due to the unique structure of this program, excellent attendance is mandatory. While enrolled in the course, the student is an active member of DECA, an association of marketing students. Students may take this course in conjunction with Marketing Cooperative Work Experience (Co-op). Industry certification may be available as part of this course. Students successfully completing this course may be eligible to earn a Career and Technical Education diploma seal. Students successfully completing this course will satisfy the sequential elective requirement for the standard or modified standard diploma. Successful completion of this course in conjunction with a corresponding industry certification may qualify for a student selected verified credit.

Entrepreneurship 2 is an advanced course enabling students to further investigate and prepare for owning and operating a small business. Students must have successfully completed Entrepreneurship (Course Code 909426) in order to participate in this class. Students enrolled in this class are encouraged to pursue the business developed in Entrepreneurship Level One. The curriculum provides an in-depth study of business ownership. Students will develop a deeper understanding of the role of marketing and finance in their business success in order to implement their Business Plan. Classroom instruction will be supplemented with industry guest speakers, field experiences, and the cocurricular student organization DECA. Students will have the option of earning additional credits through the Marketing Cooperative Education program (Co-op). Industry certification may be available as part of this course. HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT 1

This course is designed for students to investigate and prepare for careers in the hospitality industry. During class periods, and at luxury hotel training sites, students will become familiar with the operation of departments such as: Marketing, Sales and Convention services, Front Office, Accounting, Human Resources, and Food and Beverage operations to include culinary arts, specialty restaurants, and banquet and catering services. Instruction is conducted at the Tysons Corner Marriott, the Hyatt Fair Lakes, the Marriott at Fair Oaks, the Sheraton Premiere at Tysons, the Hampton Inn Springfield, the Comfort Inn Springfield, and the Springfield Hilton. The Hospitality Management programs are administered through Chantilly, Edison and Marshall Academies. Students concentrate on developing the basic social, economic, marketing and technical competencies necessary for successful employment in this industry. While enrolled in the course, the student is an active member of DECA, an association of marketing students. Program activities include field trips, guest speakers, DECA competitive events, and projects based on the individual's occupational goals. While attending classes at participating hotels, students are required to wear uniforms and follow the hotel dress code. Students may take this course in conjunction with Marketing Cooperative Work Experience (Co-op). Students completing Hospitality Management 1 (816027) with a “B” or above may articulate three credits at the Northern Virginia Community College or may be eligible to articulate six credits with Johnson and Wales University or Stratford University. (Students successfully completing this course will satisfy the sequential elective requirement for the Standard or Modified Standard diploma.) Students successfully completing this course may be eligible for articulated credit with approved colleges or universities.
