Five in a Row Activities

 

Five in a Row: Addition

You need: 2 dot cubes (dice)
               20 counters
               Gameboard
#1

Play with a partner. Work together.

  1. Player 1 rolls two cubes or dice.
  2. Player 1 adds the numbers on the dice.
  3. Player 1 covers that sum on the gameboard.
  4. Player 2 takes a turn, following steps 1 -3.
  5. If the sum is already covered, roll again.
  6. The game is over when all of the numbers in one row are covered. The numbers can go across, down, or diagonal (corner to corner).

More Ways to Play

  • Play with different gameboards.
  • Play with a dot cube (die) and a number cube (die with numbers instead of dots)
  • Play with two number cubes.

 

Five in a Row: Subtraction

You need: A  7 - 12 number cube
                A dot cube (die)
                20 counters
                Gameboard for subtraction

Play with a partner. Work together.

  1. Player 1 rolls the two cubes.
  2. Player 1 subtracts the smaller number from the larger number.
  3. Player 1 covers that number on the gameboard.
  4. Player 2 takes a turn, following steps 1 – 3.
  5.  If the number is already covered, roll again.
  6.  The game is over when all of the numbers in one row are covered. The numbers can go across, down, or diagonally (corner to corner)

 

Five in a Row with Three Cards

You need: A deck of Primary Cards (without Wild Cards)
               20 counters
               Gameboard #3

Play with a partner. Work together.

  1. Turn over the top three cards.
  2. Player 1 chooses a sum to cover on the gameboard. Choose any sum you can make with two of the numbers you turned over.
    Example:  If the numbers 3, 7 and 1 are turned over you can make the following sums:
         3 + 7 = 10      7 + 1 = 8      3 + 1 = 4
  3. Turn over three more cards.
  4. Player 2 chooses a sum to cover on the gameboard.
  5. Keep playing. If all the sums are covered, pick three new cards.
  6. The game is over when all of the numbers in one row are covered. The numbers can go across, down, or diagonally (corner to corner).

More Ways to Play:

  • Play with different gameboards.
  • Play with the Wild Cards. A Wild Card can be any number.
  • Turn over five cards on each turn. Choose any sum you can make with two of the numbers.
