AP Lit

Due: The first meeting of the class in September, 2008

Welcome to Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition, a full-year course concerned with the reading and analysis of difficult and, hopefully, rewarding works of fiction. A summer reading and writing assignment is a requirement of the class for all students. It is one way of introducing you to the sort of literature you'll be reading next year and for the AP teachers to get a sense of where you'll be starting from as writers, readers and thinkers as we plan our year together. You must complete both part A (novel) and part B (poetry). ..................................................................................Pdf version...Word version

Pre-AP 10th Grade English

Khaled Hosseini, born in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1965, writes an unforgettable story of the friendship of two boys, Amir and Hassan, growing up in Kabul. These boys come from different parts of society filled with different opportunities and beliefs. Their lives and fates tragically reflect the world around them. This novel is about friendship, family, betrayal, the price of loyalty, and so much more. While reading, you will be drawn into the cultural richness and beauty of a country that is still being devastated by war. Yet, there is hope simply in the telling of this story. First and foremost -- enjoy!

You must either purchase your own copy of this novel or check it out from a library. Purchasing is highly recommended so that you may highlight, color code, or make notes as you read. You will also need a 3-prong folder and 4 tabs/dividers for the “computer” journal assignment that follows. The novel must be read and the assignment completed over the summer. This will count as your first major grade of the year so please be ready
with this on the first day of school. The computer journal will be collected at that time......

AP Biology

Welcome to AP Biology. The following reading assignments are designed to get you ready for full participation in lectures and labs this year. Please complete both assignments and bring them with you to the first class period in September. If you have questions or confusions, please contact Mr. Switzer at jason.switzer@fcps.edu ............ ..........................................................................................Assignment ....Reading 1....Reading 2

AP US History

AP United States History is designed to provide you with the analytical skills and factual information necessary to deal critically with the problems and issues of United States history. The program prepares you for intermediate and advanced college courses by making demands upon equivalent to those made by full year introductory college courses.

We strongly suggest that you begin this assignment early and complete the requirements periodically rather than waiting until the last week before school starts. If you have any questions about this assignment, please e-mail the AP US History Team Leader, Mr. Maxwell ( Daniel.Maxwell@fcps.edu ). We will welcome the opportunity to assist you.......................................................................................................................Letter...Assignment

APCombined US and Comparative Government

AP Combined US and Comparative history is designed to provide the ambitious student with a rich and fast-paced opportunity to learn a great deal about the way governments work in the world, including our own government, and to provide the students with analytical frameworks with which to compare these governments and form intelligent, informed judgments about them. This ambitious class includes both the full AP US Government course and the full AP Comparative Government course on an accelerated basis.

Accordingly, to get a fast start, a strong summer assignment is needed. Please read the instructions for this assignment carefully, as it is due in stages--one short informational part is due before the end of the summer, and the due dates for the other parts are staggered over the first three weeks of school. I am giving students those parts now because you will need time this summer to do the groundwork they require. Plese print out the assignment in its entirety, and if you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at my school e-mail address, Mark.Faust@fcps.edu . I look forward to this class being an amazing experience for all of you! ...........................................Assignment

AP Government

The AP Government program is designed to give students a critical perspective on politics and government. This course involves both the study of general concepts used to interpret United States politics and the analysis of specific case studies. It also requires familiarity with the various institutions, groups, beliefs and ideas that make up the American political reality.

We strongly suggest that you begin early and complete requirements periodically rather than waiting until the last week before school starts. If you have any questions about this assignment, please e-mail Mr. Ward (Patrick.Ward@fcps.edu), Mrs. Papkin ( Phyllis.Papkin@fcps.edu), or Ms. Reed (Jocelyn.Reed@fcps.edu) . We welcome the opportunity to assist you...........................................................................................Assignment

AP European History

The best method for achieving success on the APEH exam and earning college credit is to expand your breadth and depth of content knowledge. It is difficult to cover the vast scope of European History in a yearlong survey course. Increasingly, AP schools are offering summer reading programs to supplement curricular materials. This activity is not a “weed-out” assignment and shouldn't be viewed as burdensome; rather, it is an opportunity for you to remain creatively and critically engaged in the content during the summer, which will hopefully excite you about taking the course. Successful completion of this assignment will also demonstrate your readiness for college-level analysis and prepare you for success in AP Modern European History

This assignment is due on the first day of school following summer vacation. Reasonable accommodations will be made for students who add the course late........ ..........................................................................................................................................Assignment

AP World History

AP World History is designed to provide you with the analytical skills and factual information necessary to deal critically with the problems and issues of World history. The program prepares you for intermediate and advanced college courses by making demands upon you equivalent to those made by full year introductory college courses. This year, you will learn to assess historical material--their relevance to a given interpretive problem, their reliability and their importance--and to deal with the evidence and interpretations presented in historical scholarship. We will expect a lot out of you, but, if you put in the necessary work, you will get a lot out of this course.

Accordingly, we begin with the enclosed summer assignment. The assignment is due the first day of school .

We strongly suggest that you begin early and complete requirements periodically rather than waiting until the last week before school starts. We also recommend that you purchase an AP World Prep book (we recommend the Princeton Review's Cracking the AP World History Exam ) to get a sense of what we will be doing next year. If you have any questions about this assignment, please e-mail either one of us (Gary.Holtzman@fcps.edu or Rufus.Harris@fcps.edu ). We will be happy to assist you........................................................................................................................Letter...Assignment
