SUMMER SCHOOL
Middle School Promotion Polilcy
"To qualify for promotion, seventh and eighth grade middle school students are required to demonstrate knowledge and competency based upon identified standards of achievement in the four core areas of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. To guarantee promotion, students must earn a passing final grade based on grade level expectations and achieve the Promotion Benchmarks required for the course.
Students who failed three or four core courses and/or have not demonstrated achievement of Promotion Benchmarks in those courses will be retained. Students who fail one or two courses are encouraged to attend summer school or be retained. At the end of summer school, a student's progress will be evaluated to determine attainment of the Promotion Benchmarks. If the student achieves the benchmarks, the student will be promoted to the next grade level. A student making measurable progress in summer school will be conditionally promoted to the next grade level and receive focused remediation at the base school during the school year. A student making minimal progress will be retained.
Earning a D+ or D in a course represents a passing grade but is not necessarily sufficient to meet the prerequisite requirements for the next level of course work. Students who receive a D+ or D in a core course and do not achieve the required attainment of Promotion Benchmarks will be required to attend summer school with the exception of seventh grade students in science and social studies. Seventh grade students in science and social studies who are conditionally promoted will receive focused remediation as eighth graders. Students who earn a D in a core course and achieve Promotion Benchmarks will be encouraged to attend middle school summer school in order to achieve success at the next grade level."

Course Offerings
All summer school information is provided in the Encore booklet which can be accessed http://www.fcps.edu/DIS/OACE/summer/index.html .
Middle school summer school is designed to help students maintain and reinforce academic skills and improve achievement on Virginia Standards of Learning tests and FCPS Promotion Benchmarks. Core courses are offered to LBSS middle school students in grades 7 and 8. It is strongly recommended that grade 7 and 8 students who need to repeat only one course enroll in Literacy and Learning Grade 7 or 8 as their second choice. Your child's counselor must sign the summer school registration form.
Summer ESOL courses are designed for A and B1 level FCPS ESOL students currently in grades 6, 7, and 8. Level A and level B1 students take one ESOL language course and one content course. The ESOL language courses focus on skills working toward the English Language Arts Program of Studies objectives. The ESOL content course develops research, note-taking skills, and reading strategies through social studies-related topics. Students qualifying for FAST Math may register for FAST Math as their content course. Your child's ESOL teacher and counselor must sign the summer school registration form.
Students receiving special education services who do not need the support of special education courses may register for general educationcontent courses. Please consider the level of special education services your child receives during the regular school year when selecting the setting (general or special education) for summer courses. The student's special education teacher, counselor, or department chairperson must sign the summer school registration form.
FCPS also offers a number of enrichment classes during the summer. Go to the Encore booklet http://www.fcps.edu/DIS/OACE/summer/index.html for specific information.
Summer School Attendance Requirements
Two days of absence, for any reason, from any middle school (23 day) course will result in the student's withdrawal from summer school. Absences include time accumulated for tardiness, early departure, and disciplinary action. Attendance on the last two days is mandatory to ensure completion of course requirements.
Transportation
Transportation is provided only within the assigned summer school attendance area for all Fairfax County students. However, bus stops are not the same as those during the school year. Generally, buses pick up and drop off at an elementary, middle, or high school within the summer school attendance area. The summer school principal will mail bus route information to students who register.
Payment
Go to the Encore booklet http://www.fcps.edu/DIS/OACE/summer/index.html for specific information.
Registering for Summer School
Counselors will help students, who are failing a core class or not meeting benchmarks in English or math, to complete the registration form. After your child's form is signed by the counselor, parents complete the registration process by mail, by fax, or in person. Information on how and where to register is in the Encore booklet (see web site above).
