School year 2007 - 2008

Middle School Curriculum

Each middle school student at LBSS Middle School is required to take English, math, social studies, science, and physical education. The remaining two courses are taken from courses in art, the AVID program, business and information technology, family and consumer science, foreign language, language arts, music, technology education, and theatre arts.

To supplement the regular education curriculum, several courses are offered to give students additional support in developing English and math skills necessary for success at the high school level. LBSS middle school also provides ESOL classes at all levels, giving students new to American education the support needed for language acquisition and academic success. Finally, LBSS Middle School offers two levels of gifted education-the honors program and the Gifted and Talented Center (GTC) program.

For more detailed information on courses offered at LBSS Middle School , view the course selection book and the information below.

Skill Improvement Courses

  • Read 180
  • Power Literacy
  • Power Math
  • Algebra Readiness Initiative

ESOL Program http://www.fcps.edu/DIS/OMSI/esol/index.html

The mission of ESOL program is to develop the English proficiency of students to enhance their academic achievement. The ESOL program at the middle school level goes from level 1 where students have been identified as having little or no English language proficiency to level 4 where students have met the exit criteria and continue to develop academic language while being monitored for two years

Middle School Gifted Education Program

* Honors http://www.fcps.edu/DIS/gt/honors.htm

The Honors program, aligned with national standards for gifted and talented education, is for students who have demonstrated high achievement in a specific area of academic strength. The program uses a county-developed middle school curriculum that extends the Fairfax County Program of Studies (POS) in depth and complexity. The curriculum is based on the Parallel Model, a nationally endorsed model of curriculum for high-ability learners. The program seeks to provide opportunities to build on the individual strengths of identified achievers in a core subject in order to address their potential to progress to high levels of accomplishment through challenging inquiry and learning.  Download our brochure (pdf).

English, Science, and Social Studies

Students are placed in Honors English, Science, and Social Studies by successfully completing a comprehensive screening to include:

  • Ability test data, such as
    • Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test [NNAT].
    • Cognitive Abilities Test [CogAT].
    • Otis Lennon School Ability [OLSAT].
  • Achievement testing, such as
    • Stanford 9.
    • Developmental Reading Assessment [DRA].
    • State Standards of Learning Scores [SOLs]).
  • Grades in the core subject areas.
  • Gifted Behavior Rating Scale (GBRS).
  • Recommendation.

Rising 7th grade gifted and talented (GT) center students who choose to leave the GT center qualify for Honors English, Social Studies, and Science courses.

Students enrolled in the 7th grade Honors program carry over their placement into 8th grade unless there is a question regarding the placement. In such cases, the principal at the middle school reviews the information and makes a decision.

Mathematics

  • Students are placed in Math 7 Honors by completing one of the following three items:
  • Mathematics 6 Compacted.
  • A yearlong accelerated program.
  • Successfully completing a comprehensive screening to include:
    • Teacher recommendation.
    • Standardized screening test for mathematics.
    • Additional testing information
    • Gifted Behaviors Rating Scale With Commentary (GBRS).
    • Grades in mathematics.

Rising 7th grade students will be placed in Algebra Honors based on all the following:

  • Successfully completing Mathematics 6 Compacted or a yearlong accelerated program.
  • A score at or above the 92th percentile on the Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test.
  • A score at or above 500 on the Virginia Standards of Learning grade 8 mathematics test.

* GTC http://www.fcps.edu/DIS/gt/center.htm

The GT Center program for students in grades 7 and 8 offers identified students a highly challenging instructional program that follows the FCPS Program of Studies. Differentiation in the depth, breadth, and pace of instruction is designed to meet the needs of advanced learners with a strong emphasis on higher level thinking skills. Adaptations are made to the curriculum in order to provide an appropriate level of challenge for gifted learners with a strong emphasis on critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making. Students participate with the entire student body in school-based activities such as student government, physical education, band and strings, chorus, and other electives
