Description of the Lake Braddock Middle School Science program:
"Fairfax County Public Schools middle school science Program of Studies, which isaligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL), centers on the students’
abilities to:
- achieve a solid base of knowledge in science
- apply learned knowledge to everyday situations
- use scientific language to communicate information
- actively conduct scientific investigations
- make connections to other disciplines
- use technology to access, analyze, and present scientific information
The curriculum for seventh grade life science provides students with a detailed
understanding of the characteristics of living things and the interrelationships
between living things and their environment.
The curriculum for eighth grade science provides students with a detailed understanding of the properties of matter and the characteristics of energy. It includes the application of these physical science principles to the earth/space system. The methods of teaching emphasize the process of inquiry and discovery through laboratory investigations and hands-on activities. Inquiry skills are not taught in isolation; rather, they are co-developed with student acquisition of science knowledge and concepts. The role of the science teacher is to guide and facilitate learning. Teachers select learning experiences to meet the interests, knowledge, abilities, and backgrounds of their students.
