TEXTBOOKS:

Elements of Literature (Sixth Course) & Elements of Writing (Grammar book)

Writing

You will write in a variety of forms including literary analysis, researched essay writing, informational writing, comparative writing, poetry, and informal journaling. You will write regularly to express opinions, create questions, gather information, and clarify purpose. Prepare to experiment creatively. Writing will challenge you through a variety of techniques and a continuous push to think in an innovative manner. Be on the search to find voice - your voice - within writing. All major and some minor works of writing will be kept for a student portfolio. Many writing assignments will be entered into TurnItIn.com.

Vocabulary & Grammar

Realize the power of words! Enhancement of vocabulary will take place through lists generated from literature covered and through a vocabulary workbook. The Level G vocabulary book is $7, due as soon as possible. Expect quizzes approximately every two weeks. Grammar assignments are intended to improve writing and help analyze the writing styles of studied authors. This is a definitive step within the writing process also as it will help the development of voice.

Speaking & Listening

Participation is essential within class; this is accomplished by taking an active role in class discussions as well as listening when others (students and the teacher) are speaking. Small group activities will require heightened communication skills. Whether given individually or in groups, quarterly projects (often with research) will be presented. An extensive research multimedia/multigenre project will push you creatively while you also discover cultures. This course is dependent on participation; greater participation equals greater reward.
