Dear LBSS Parents and Guardians,
In order to provide you with the latest information concerning your child- including progress reports- it is necessary that we receive directory information/emergency care card changes as soon as they are known. This includes phone numbers and email addresses. If you have a FCPS 24/7 Parent View account you can make many of these changes online (address changes must be made in person). To change directory information related to your child:
- Login to FCPS 24/7 using your Parent View ID and password.
- Click on the weCare@school link.
- Click on your child’s name. If you have more than one child attending an FCPS school, and the changes/updates are needed for all of your children.
- The first screen allows you to change/add any parent/guardian information. Remember- address changes must be made in person. After making changes, click next.
- The second screen allows you to change/add information about “other contacts.” After making changes, click next.
- The third screen allows you to change/add medical and health information about your child. After making changes, click next.
- You should be back at the page where you clicked on your child’s name. In order for the changes to be made, you must click on SUBMIT. (Complete this for each child if necessary.) Log out of the system.

A Standards of Learning (SOL) primer for parents and students
The following is provided as general information about the mathematics SOL and can be found on the Virginia DOE website at: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/mathematics/parents_students_should_know.shtml
What Parents & Students Should Know About the New Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning
The Standards of Learning (SOL) for each subject identify the essential academic content for each grade level and course. The Virginia Board of Education revised the Mathematics SOL in 2009 to ensure that Virginia graduates will continue to compete successfully with their peers in other states and countries in the global economy.
The revision process drew upon the expertise of national organizations such as the College Board and ACT (publishers of the SAT and ACT college-admissions tests), college faculty and classroom teachers and mathematics specialists from Virginia school divisions.
The new mathematics standards also are equal in rigor and depth to the national model standards – known as the Common Core State Standards – that many states have adopted.
How have the Mathematics SOL tests changed?
The new mathematics tests reflect the increased rigor of the new standards. While most of the questions on the new tests are in the familiar multiple-choice format, approximately 15 percent of the items (depending on the test) are new technology-enhanced items.
Technology-enhanced items allow students to apply what they have learned and use critical-thinking skills in ways not possible with traditional multiple-choice questions. The items mirror common classroom tasks and assignments.
For example, “drag and drop” items require students to sort, order, classify, or label to provide an answer. The “drag and drop” functionality also gives students the ability to create graphs from a given data set. “Hot spot” items require students to identify all possible correct answers from a given set or list, plot points on a grid, or highlight a specific feature in a diagram or figure. “Fill-in-the-blank” items require students to complete open-ended problems and type answers into the blanks.
Technology-enhanced items on the new tests in grades 6-8 and the Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II tests were field tested with students during the 2010-2011 school year.
Are resources available to help students prepare for the new mathematics tests?
The Virginia Department of Education provides practice tests and other resources to help students and parents understand and prepare for tests based on the 2009 Mathematics SOL.
Narrated Demonstration of New Technology-Enhanced Test Items – New online test items require students to apply what they have learned.
SOL Practice Items – Practice items include examples of the technology-enhanced items.
How will the new Mathematics SOL tests impact students?
Some students will find the new assessments challenging – as students have previously when the Board of Education strengthened academic standards. But past history suggests that student achievement on the tests will rise as school divisions further align their curricula and classroom instruction with the new standards and students become more comfortable with the format of the new tests. Lower pass rates at the beginning of this process are a sign that the state has raised the bar, not that students are learning less.
Here is the LBSS math SOL schedule:
Math 7 SOL - May 23, 2013, at 7:25 AM
Math 8 SOL - May 22, 2013, at 7:25 AM
Algebra 1 SOL for MS students - May 30 at 7:25 AM
Algebra 1 SOL for HS students - May 29 at 7:25 AM
Geometry SOL - May 22 at 7:25 AM
Algebra 2 SOL - May 30 at 7:25 AM

Dear Lake Braddock Parents and Guardians,
On Monday, May 6, 2013, our month of standardized assessments begins with our first Advanced Placement (AP) exam. AP exams are scheduled to be administered through May 17, and makeups on May 22 to 24. These are high stakes exams for all students as their scores can influence college credit and scholarships.
Then, on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, our window for the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests opens. We will be testing, by subject, through May 30. Retakes and makeups will begin on May 31. Passing an SOL test provides your child with a verified credit towards graduation.
Attached is a calendar for the month that shows all the AP exams and SOL tests as well as the date it will be administered. To assist your child, be sure:
Prior to the first SOL test we will be providing periodic reminders and helpful information for parents to assist their child with the SOL.

Dear Lake Braddock Parents and Guardians,
Today, our security personnel and SRO discovered a stranger inside of the school building. While being questioned, the individual ran from the building; additional police were called in and the suspect was quickly apprehended.
We are committed to maintaining a safe environment for our students. The Fairfax County Police Department and the Fairfax County Public Schools Office of Safety and Security are our partners in helping us protect your children. Please talk with your son or daughter and urge him or her to always be aware of surroundings and to avoid any seemingly dangerous situations. Student should travel in pairs whenever possible and immediately report to an adult any suspicious individuals in the vicinity of the school.
Thank you for your cooperation. If you have questions or concerns about this or other school-related matters, please do not hesitate to call the school.

Dear Lake Braddock Parents, Guardians and Community Members,
At this time (7:45 AM, Monday, April 29, 2013), Lake Braddock Secondary School is conducting a Lockdown DRILL. You may receive text messages, IMs, Tweets, FB updates or a phone call from your child telling you that the school is in lockdown. THIS IS A DRILL.
Each year, FCPS schools are required to conduct two (2) lockdown drills. The purpose of these drills is to practice the procedures put in place should an event ever occur at a school. In March, the LBSS Administrative Staff successfully completed a "tabletop exercise" with the FCPS Safety & Security Staff, Fairfax County Police Department officials, and other officials. In reviewing our procedures for drills (fire, tornado, and lockdown), it was suggested that an unannounced drill be conducted with the participation of our SROs and other Fairfax County police officials. This DRILL is taking place right now. Please do not be alarmed should your child contact you. When your child returns home today, please speak to him/her about the importance of conducting these drills and the necessary part they play in to ensure their own safety as well as that of all students at Lake Braddock.
Thank you for your patience and understanding,
LBSS Administrative Staff

Dear Lake Braddock Parents, Guardians, Students and Community,
This morning, at approximately 10:30 AM, a fuse blew in one of the transformers providing electrical service to the school. The affected areas included the cafeteria, gymnasium, and the C and M hallways on both floors. Power was restored at noon.
This disruption resulted in shifting of our lunch schedules as well as limiting students to one lunch and no snacks. We successfully served lunch to all students. In addition, several classes were moved to temporary locations in other parts of the building unaffected by the outage.
Please be assured that the disruptions were temporary and that we are back to our noraml schedule.
Thank you,
LBSS Administrative Staff
March 15, 2013
Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members,
Please take a moment to read how you can support the instructional and extracurricular programs at Lake Braddock Secondary School:
Turf Field Project:
Lake Braddock continues to raise money for turf fields that will benefit school and local youth programs. In the school, there are many programs that we benefit from the turf fields- all students enrolled in a physical education class (currently 74% of all LBSS students are enrolled in a PE class), our outdoor performing groups such as the marching band, and the majority of our outdoor sports programs during the fall and spring seasons. Fairfax County Public Schools and the Fairfax County Government are NOT paying for turf fields. It is up to each school to raise the money.
Although the Athletic Boosters are leading the campaign, these is truely a school-wide endeavor as it will benefit all LBSS students. Monetary donations are accepted as any time, but the boosters are also raising funds through their brick project. You can purchase a brick engraved with your family name, a child's name, class years, activities involved in at LBSS, and have the brink installed as part of the project here at Lake Braddock. Phase 1 is ending soon and brick prices will be going up Friday, March 22. Visit lbsports.org for more information on the turf field project.
Got Golf?
The 16th Annual Bruin Golf Tournament directly supports the athletic programs of Lake Braddock and its student-athletes. This year's torunamnet will be contested on the greens of Westfield Golf Club on Tuesday, May 28, 2013. Go to www.LBSports.org for more details.
Spring Sports
The scrimmages have been completed, teams have been set, and the competition begins this week for our spring sports teams. If you're looking for something to do with friends and family, bring them out to one of our spring sports contests. The enitre spring schedule can be found on the LBSS website -> click on Purple/Gold Calendar.

Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members,
The following message is the Second Semester School Safety and Security Update- Part 2. The purpose of this message is to provide you with information about Lake Braddock Secondary School as it pertains to our efforts to increase safety and security for our students.
Morning Attendance Calls
Starting Monday, March 18, 2013, attendance calls will be made at 10:00 AM on all students whose first block attendance is listed as unexcused or unverified. Parents/Guardians will receive a phone call or email message indicating that the student was marked absent from school. If you receive a call and know that your child is sick, please call your child’s subschool concerning the absence.
Interior Cameras
Installation of our interior cameras is currently underway. We anticipate being online by spring break or soon thereafter. The cameras will provide coverage for locker areas, large group areas like the gym and cafeteria, as well as major hallways. The cameras are not monitored by school personnel during the school day, but is setup to record continuously, thus providing a recorded image when necessary.
Lockers and Locker Security
Lockers are the property of the Fairfax County Public School System. When used as designed, the lockers at Lake Braddock are very secure. Students should ensure that their assigned locker(s) is properly closed, latched and secured. A large amount of physical force and time is necessary in order to pry open a properly secured locker. Please remember that students should not share lockers and/or combinations. Students are also reminded not to overload lockers. Any damage to a locker should be reported to Security as soon as possible.
Personal Property at School
Fairfax County Public Schools does not assume responsibility for the personal property of students and does not purchase insurance for their property. Students and their parents are urged, therefore, to carefully consider the types and value of property that students take to school. Items of significant monetary or sentimental value are strongly discouraged, including cell phones, CD players, IPOD’s etc. and certain types of apparel and jewelry. With regard to items that are relevant to the instructional program and that students take to school to share with a class, parents and students should give consideration to the value of the property relative to the limited storage and security that is available in schools. This is not intended to discourage the sharing of materials that enhance the instructional program but to urge appropriate consideration of what is taken to school. The same consideration should be given to personal property brought to extracurricular activities, including musical instruments. Student use of any storage area provided by the school division is on a voluntary basis; there is no requirement to use any storage areas. Students who choose to use locker storage, or any storage area that can be locked, shall be responsible for the security of any associated keys or combinations.
Visitor Policy
All visitors during the school day must check in at the Main Office. All visitors are required to show a picture I.D. and sign in through our Visitor Management System in the Main Office. Visitors must wear their Visitor’s Pass at all times when in the building. Any and all visitors must have a valid reason to have access to the school. Former students, siblings, friends etc. will not be granted access to the school without the approval of the Principal or the Principal’s designee. Visitors will be required to check-out when exiting the school.

Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members,
The following message is the Second Semester School Safety and Security Update- Part 1. The purpose of this message is to provide you with information about Lake Braddock Secondary School as it pertains to our efforts to increase safety and security for our students.
Arrive Safe
Parents and staff members have expressed concerns about “adult” driver behavior in the school parking lot. Complaints range from almost being hit by someone not paying attention to vehicles making U-turns in the parking lot to “cut the line.” We rely on drivers to act civilly toward one another and to obey the posted signs on the property. Reckless driving is a moving violation for which the SROs can and will write tickets.
If your child rides a school bus, congratulations, as you are already taking advantage of the safest means for your child to get to school as well as the only means of travel to school that late arrival is excused. The majority of our buses arrive at school before the 7:15 AM early warning bell, but if they are running late- whether due to the weather or traffic- the students on the bus receive an excused tardy to class. This is not the case for students who are driven to school, drive themselves, or walk. Arriving late for these students is, generally, unexcused. Our buses also run in all types of weather: if it’s raining outside, the buses will run; if it’s a two-hour delay due to snow, the buses will run.
There are two Kiss & Ride (K&R) drop-off areas at LBSS:
The primary K&R area is off the Burke Lake Road entrance at the Bruin Island.
The secondary K&R drop-off is at Entrance 3 (the gated entrance nearest the intersection of Raintree Rd and Lake Braddock Dr).
The bus loop and the gated entrance at Marsea Ct are not Kiss & Ride drop areas.
Students who walk to school should be reminded to only use marked crosswalks when crossing major streets near the school. Also, never cross a street from between parked cars. Inattentive drivers may not see you until it’s too late. We know that these are common sense reminders, but sometimes we tend to forget the little things.

Message to Lake Braddock Parents and Guardians Concerning Cell Phone Use by Students
Dear Lake Braddock Parents and Guardians,
As an administrative staff, we understand the importance of being able to communicate with your child before and after school hours, and thus the necessity of students having cell phones at school. However, it is apparent that cell phone use by students doesn’t stop when the bell rings, and neither do text messages and phone calls from friends and parents. Cell phones, in particular Smartphones, have become much more of a distraction and disruption in the classroom than the instructional tool envisioned by the FCPS Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy.
Our expectation, for all students, concerning cell phones is quite simple: at 7:25 AM the device is turned off – not on silent, vibrate or airplane mode— and out of sight (put away) until the end of the school day. Students who choose not to meet this expectation will have their cell phone confiscated and it will be returned to the parent (or an adult on the emergency care card).
There are two exceptions: first, a device registered through the BYOD program may be used in class for instructional purposes with the permission of the teacher; and, second, for HIGH SCHOOL students ONLY, the device may be used in the cafeteria during lunch except for texting and making phone calls.
If a family emergency presents itself and you need to speak to your child, during the school day, please call your child’s subschool office or counselor. We will get them from class in order for you to speak to them. This also allows our staff to provide your child with immediate support.
Additionally, many of the standardized tests that are given to students throughout the school year have hefty consequences associated with the possession of an electronic device during the test. For example, both the SAT and AP exams are stopped and the student is removed from the testing area and not provided an opportunity to complete the exam. The SOL tests, which are required for verified credits towards graduation, also have restrictions on cell phone access during testing.
Finally, unattended cell phones- those left on top of a locker, in a backpack left in the hallway or a locker room, or left in an unlocked locker- are targets of opportunity. The number one item reported as “stolen” in middle and high schools is a cell phone. We live by the slogan: Love It – Lock It or Lose It! FCPS does not reimburse students or parents for property loss due to theft. We suggest that valuable items be left at home. However, if valuable items do make their way to school, then they need to be locked up—in a locked locker to which only your child knows the combination and does not share the locker with a friend.
Please take a few minutes to review this expectation with your child.
Thank you,
LBSS Administrative Staff

Dear Lake Braddock Parents, Guardians, and Community Members,
Hello, this is Rob Sanders, Associate Principal, from Lake Braddock Secondary School. I wanted to let you know that in a few minutes we will be conducting a LOCKDOWN DRILL. This is only a DRILL and is required of all FCPS schools prior to February 1st each school year. Please be assured that your children are not in danger. In the event of an actual emergency, you would receive a Keep In Touch message similar to the one below:
"Hello, this is (TITLE, NAME), from LAKE BRADDOCK SEC. I wanted to let you know that the police department has asked us to be in a lockdown mode because of a situation currently in progress in the surrounding area. Please note that your children are not in danger. This is being implemented as a precautionary measure to ensure their safety. We have been instructed to keep students at school until they can be picked up by their parents or legal guardians. After (TIME), please park your car on the street and go directly to your child's classroom where you will be asked to sign your child out before taking him or her home. We will let you know if there are any changes between now and (TIME). Thank you very much for your cooperation."
Please discuss the importance of conducting such drills with your child tonight. Thank you for your assistance.

Happy Holidays from the LBSS PTSA
Dear Lake Braddock Secondary School Community,
As the LBSS community reflects on the tragedy in Connecticut, I wanted to assure you that there is nothing more important to us than providing a safe and secure learning environment for our students and employees. I want to assure you that we will continue to be vigilant in our efforts to protect them.
Our administrators and security staff, which include two Fairfax County police officers, are responsible for ensuring your child’s safety at school. Our staff patrols both the grounds and building while school is in session. The building entrances and grounds are monitored 24/7 through video surveillance. The interior of the building will soon be added to our coverage. Visitors are required to check-in at the main office and are screened through the LobbyGuard system. We also practice our emergency procedures, including lockdown drills, throughout the school year. We hope that by knowing of these practices you will feel confident and comfortable that your child is safe while at school.
Counselors and mental health support for staff and students will be available at LBSS beginning tomorrow. Please let a teacher, counselor, or administrator know if your child needs assistance. In addition, resources for support are available at www.fcps.edu .
Our thoughts are with the students, staff and families of Newtown, Connecticut.

Dear Lake Braddock Secondary School Parents/Guardians,
On Wednesday, October 17, 2012, students will be released from school three hours early at 11:10 AM. The afternoon is a Professional Development Day for the Lake Braddock staff. Students in grades 7-11 will report at their usual time; however, seniors will report at 9 AM for several senior-related activities. All students will be released at 11:10 AM.
During this day, middle school students will follow a modified class schedule (attending first, seventh and fifth period classes- in that order- lunch will be served through fifth period class). All ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students will take the PSAT or Explorer ACT Exam through their first period class. Please make sure your child eats breakfast and arrives to school on time. If they arrive late to school, they will not have enough time to test.
Ninth grade students are required to pay $17 for their Explorer ACT test if they wish to receive test score results. Eleventh grade students are required to pay $17 for their PSAT test if they wish to receive test score results. Tenth graders do not have to pay since the county covers the cost for each student.
Students who do NOT pay are still expected to take the Explorer ACT or PSAT exam. The test fee will only be collected if your child brings a check in to school and delivers it directly to Amy Soos—Assessment Coach in room C156/C157 by Tuesday October 16, 2012. Registration forms for students to fill out are located in Ms. Soos' office (C156). Checks should be made payable to “LBSS.” Please make sure that the student’s first name, last name, and grade level are printed clearly on the check’s memo line.
Following the test, high school students will have an opportunity to purchase snacks from the cafeteria prior to the buses departing.
