The unit
started with students dividing into groups which became toy
companies.
Each company was responsible for learning about one simple
machine.
They got information from books and the
Internet.
Then the groups
worked together to create a poster about their machine.
They presented their poster to the class and their
classmates recorded important information in the "Simple
Machine" books.
Each company
had a homework assignment to come up with a logo. Once the
homework was returned, the company chose the winning logo
and someone drew it up for their company poster.
Then the students each got a chance to design a toy to be
made by their company. They drew up their prototypes in the
computer lab.
Next, each
company chose one toy to manufacture. Once the decision was
made, the companies had to get to work. Each toy had to
include at least two simple machines in its design.
Every
successful company knows that advertising can make all the
difference. So, each toy company created an ad that was
videotaped.
Once the toys were
created, the ads taped and posters for each toy put up, it
was time for the Toy Expo to start.
Visitors were
welcomed to the toy expo which took place in two
trailers.
Each company
was anxious to show off its wares and try to convince
potential customers to spend their money.
When an order was placed, the customer had to pay and fill
out the order form. Students used calculators to figure out
totals with multiple orders.
Students demonstrated the toys and even gave customer
discounts if you had run out of available
funds!
Students had fun
counting their money.
The competition was fierce but all businesses seemed to be
happy with their profits.
