First you need to look at
pumpkins and then find out what is inside of them. There is
nothing like hands on investigations for learning the parts
of the pumpkin. Students also enjoyed many other math
activities such as measuring, comparing, seration, adding
pumpkins, estimating, counting seeds by 10's and 1's, and
sequencing.
Students also learned the
poem "Five Little Pumpkins" and acted it out for classmates
and reading buddies. Some students created popsicle stick
puppets to act out the poem.
There are many words that start with the letter "p" and each
child made their own book that started like the word
pumpkin.
In art class, students
made their own pumpkins for the pumpkin
patch.
Finally, the book was
ready to be put together and enjoyed.
Here students move words into the proper place to label the
parts of a pumpkin.
The pumpkin life cycle can be sequenced. Student work
illustrates many pages.
Students can now read their own book about pumpkins in
kindergarten-friendly language.
