Cricket Times

Introduction: You are getting ready to study a fascinating insect.......the cricket. How on earth are you going to remember all of the things you did at school?? Your parents are going to want to know all about your study of crickets. There are many ways to communicate. Have you ever heard the expression, "a picture is worth a thousand words"? It is true. Wouldn't it be great if there were a way to show your parents all the things you've been doing with crickets at school?

Task: Design a class newspaper all about your study of crickets. Include pictures, and different sections of the newspaper like sports, jokes, articles, food, book and movie reviews.

Process:

  1. While you are conducting your study of crickets, investigate the parts of a newspaper by looking through several papers. Find the different sections. Talk about their format. As you study your crickets, create the following sections of your own newspaper:
    1. Feature Articles: Get ready to prepare your cricket vivarium by illustrating what might be included. Take digital photos and write an article about vivarium preparation. Write fictional cricket stories.
    2. Artwork: After learning about the cricket body parts, illustrate them using KidPix. Illustrate the four life needs of crickets (food, water, air, place to live)
    3. Food: Create a plan to design a cricket from food (large marshmallows, mini M&M's, cut up licorice, Skittles, pretzel sticks, halved GummiSavers). Follow your plan to construct the cricket. Scan your plan and write recipes for Edible Crickets.
    4. Movie Reviews: View the movie "The Cricket in Times Square" and write movie reviews.
    5. Poetry: Study different kinds of poems and create your own.
    6. Jokes and Riddles: Study the format of jokes and riddles. Try your hand at cricket riddles.
    7. Sports: Hold a jumping contest and write a sports report. Make sure you graph the results.
  2. Time to release your crickets and put all the articles and pictures together so that you can publish the paper.
  3. Fill in the Cricket Unit Survey.
  4. Take your newspaper home and share it with your family.

Opportunities to share:

  1. The newspaper will be shared with classmates and families.
  2. Students will share their stories, riddles, jokes and reviews throughout the process.

Assessment: A student survey is given after the unit is finished.

Teacher section: This unit was designed for two second grade classes. It took approximately 3 weeks to complete. Each child participated in all of the activities except the poetry, sports articles and movie reviews. When it got to that point, teachers let the children decide which one of the three they wanted to do. A representation of each activity was chosen for the newspaper. A parent volunteer did the final coelation of the paper on the computer.
