Second Grade Time Capsules

Students started by brainstorming ideas for artifacts that would represent each of the items that they wanted to put into the time capsules. It didn't take long and soon they were creating the artifacts.

The explorers group decided on flags and boats that represented their explorers. They also put in some mysterious clues like the maple leaf from the Canadian flag for Jacques Cartier. And a piece of wood with part of the word Pinta written on it.

The geography group created maps for the world and United States using MapMakers Toolkit. Then they scrambled the names of the continents and oceans. They also made clay globes.

After the artifacts were created, each group had to enter the hints into the computer.
Then it was time to find an appropriate place to bury the capsules.

The class scouted a place and decided the courtyard would be perfect. The custodian predug a large hole. Parent volunteers came to help on the day of burial.

Everyone got into the act. Digging is hard work.

The capsules were ready to lower into the ground.

They were buried in the hole.

And a rock marked the spot.
