Banking
|
Each
child earned up to 10 pennies for doing "acts of kindness"
during the week prior to the Kinder Bakeshop. They kept
track of each child's "account" on a big chart in the
classroom.
Each child constructed a checkbook which had
checks
and a page with ten
pennies.
|
|
When the bakery and bank
were set up prior to the grand opening, a pocket chart was
hung in back of the bank. Each student's account was
assigned a pocket and a baggie with the amount of pennies in
their account was placed in the pocket. You might be able to
see it in this picture, through the bank window.

|
When it was time to go to
the bakery to shop, each student had to visit the bank
first. They wrote a check for the amount of their
withdrawal, crossed out the correct number of pennies in
their checkbook and the bankers counted out the pennies from
their account.

Here a student is handing the banker a
check.

Another happy customer.
|

This is a good time to go to the bank. There is no
line.

Making
Choices at the Bakery
This
was a great time to talk about "needs" and "wants" but of
course, everyone "needed" cookies. :-)
|

The bakery had strict hygience regulations. Workers had to
wear hats and plastic gloves at all times.
|
|

Sometimes the choices were overwhelming.

Making
Purchases at the Bakery
|

First the cookies had to be scanned. Once in a while, the
customer even got in the act.
|
|
Then the correct change
was put in the cash register. If changed needed to be made,
there was a calculator on hand.

Other
activities
|

There were many other activities to go along with this unit.
But, the story of The Gingerbread Man was closely tied to
the unit and students created their own gingerbread
cookies,
|

made their own gingerbread houses,
|

and created gingerbread glyphs.
