Kinder Bakeshop

Introduction:The teachers of the school have a yen for sweets and are bored with the ones they can buy in the cafeteria. They are too tired to make them at home and no time to go to the store to buy cookies. They are even willing to pay for fresh baked goodies. Is there a way for the kindergarten students to provide a source for yummy treats right in the school? (Seesample letter sent to students. Several teachers were recruited to create and send letters.)

Task: Kindergarten students will create a bakery where they can sell cookies for one week. They'll be able to earn their own "money" and deposit it into their kinder bank account. When the bakery opens, they'll man the bank and the bakeshop. They'll have the opportunity to withdraw money from their accounts in order to purchase cookies.

Process:

  1. Teacher reads letters from teachers and brainstorms with students a way to create a bakery.
  2. A chart is created to track "good deeds" done by students. In exchange for a good deed, students will earn one penny. This penny will go into a student bank account and can be used to purchase a cookie when the bakery opens.
  3. The concept of a bank and a penny are discussed.
  4. Play games using pennies to make purchases.
  5. Use computer to practice exchanging pennies for baked goods.
  6. Learn and sing the money song.
  7. Construct checkbooks. (Check book page (pdf)) (Penny page-students check off pennies in their checkbook as they spend them)
  8. The bakery is planned (signs, decorations, price tags for cookies, ads for the teachers' lounge and staff bulletin board).
  9. Letter is sent home to parents asking for cookie donations.
  10. Discuss community roles (banker, baker, cashier, customer, advertiser).
  11. The terms goods, services, needs, wants, earning, saving, and spending are explained.
  12. Books on baking and cookies are read. (The Gingerbread Man, If You Give A Mouse A Cookie)
  13. Make a letter "c" book.
  14. Create a "mouse snack" to go along with If You Give a Mouse A Cookie.
  15. Sequence characters from the stories The Gingerbread Man, If You Give A Mouse A Cookie
  16. Sequence cookies 1-10 and draw corresponding amount of chocolate chips.
  17. Retell The Gingerbread Man using flannel board and puppets.
  18. Create gingerbread men glyphs.

Opportunities to share what they have learned:

  1. Open the bakeshop to staff and other classes.
  2. Share the experience on KPOV (in-house school news show.)

Assessment: A checklist is kept of student skills during the unit. Anecdotal notes are used for daily assessment and ECAP assessment folder checklist is used as a guide.
