In the summer, humpback whales live in waters from southern California to the Gulf of Alaska to the Chukchi Sea. In winter,they migrate to warmer Subtropical areas. They feed on krill and small fish such as herring. Man is the humpback whale's most dangerous enemy. They are about 52 feet long and weigh 30-50 tons. Their upper bodies are black or blue, and their flippers and undersides can be white. Humpback whales have a life span of 45-50 years. They live in groups called pods. Humpback whales can dive for 30 minutes but usually only for 15 minutes. There are only 10,000-15,000 humpback whales world-wide. They are an endangered species. They sing amazing songs.
