Lesson: Spreadsheets with Smarties- Directions

Directions for Creating Your
Spreadsheet
Unwrap your Smarties and separate them by
color.
Along with your group, count the total
number of Smarties for boys and girls by color. Then
calculate the total for each color. Fill out a worksheet for
each partnership.
Sign each of your group's
worksheets.
Now go back to your computer and you are
ready to start creating your spreadsheet. Each person will
create a spreadsheet so decide who goes first.
Open ClarisWorks and choose the
spreadsheet option.
In cell A2 type "red". Hit return and
type "orange" in A3, A4 "yellow" etc.
Click in cell B1 type "boys". Click in C1
and type "girls", D1 "total"
Now fill in the other cells B2...B7,
C2...C7, D2...D7 with the numbers on your worksheet.
Highlight the whole spreadsheet by
clicking in the unmarked cell above the #1 and to the left
of the letter A.
Make your font bigger by choosing Format,
then Size and 14 point.
Now your cells are too small for your
font size. Place your cursor between row markers 7 and 8
until you see the arrows. Hold down the mouse button and
move the arrow down. Your cells will adjust. Your
spreadsheet must be highlighted for this too work for the
whole spreadsheet.Click anywhere on the spreadsheet to
unhighlight.
Insert the header by choosing Format,
then Insert Header . You will see your spreadsheet jump
downwards and your cursor will be blinking above your
spreadsheet. Type "Graphing Smarties" then hit a the return
key and type your name.
You are ready to save this to your disk.
Go to File, then Save As . Insert your disk and wait for the
disk icon to come up. Then name your document "Graphing
Smarties." Click Save.
Go to File and Quit. Take out your
disk. It's your partner's turn.
