Simple Machines

Introduction
The ancient Egyptians built pyramids using different machines. These were not machines that ran on gas or electricity. They were machines that were used to make work easier. These machines were called simple machines.

Task
Your school is planning to build a replica of an ancient Egyptian pyramid on your playground! The principal wants the pyramid made the way it would have been made in ancient Egypt. Your school is counting on you to become a machine expert! You need to help the builders decide which machine or machines will work the best.

After researching, you will be expected to present a poster to your teacher. Your poster should show which machine or machines would work best to create the pyramid. Drawings, diagrams, and support from the research are required.

Process

  • Click on each set of underlined words below to link to websites.  Collect information from these sites to be used on your poster. Write down information about each machine. Draw pictures and diagrams to help you remember. Think about how the machine could be used to help create a pyramid like the ancient Egyptian pyramids.
  • Simple Machines A machine is a tool used to make work easier. Simple machines are simple tools used to make work easier. Research this link to find general information about simple machines.
  • A fun look at Simple Machines Click on the different machines to see examples of how they work.
  • Learn about Ancient Egyptian Pyramids.
  • Read How to build a Pyramid and learn about the different theories behind how pyramids were constructed .
  • Read Mike Muligan and His Steam Shovel to identify the simple machines described in the book.  Be prepared to discuss this book with a group or the class.
  • Read How Things Work by David Macaulay to find out more about how simple machines work.  Be prepared to discuss this book with a group or the class.

Conclusion

Now that you have researched simple machines and the construction of the pyramids, you will need to create your poster.

Collect materials from your teacher. Use your notes and drawings to complete this assignment.

Have fun and be ready to share with your class and your teacher! Make sure you support your ideas with things you learned from the information in this site. Use good science words to explain why your chosen machines will work best.
