Benjamin Franklin
was born January 17, 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was
the 15th child in his family and went to work in his fathers
chandlery (wax and candle shop) when he was 10. Next, he
worked in his brother's printing house. He was very smart
and loved to read. By 1723, at the age of 17, Franklin left
for Philadelphia with no money and became a printer. By 1730
he owned his own business and published the Pennsylvania
Gazette. He married Deborah Read and had three
children.
In 1732, Franklin
began publishing the annual Poor Richard's Almanac. He had
many readers and became a household name. He helped to
establish the first U.S. lending library (1731) and an
academy that later became the University of
Pennsylvania.
