Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin was born January 17, 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the 15th child in his family and went to work in his fathers chandlery (wax and candle shop) when he was 10. Next, he worked in his brother's printing house. He was very smart and loved to read. By 1723, at the age of 17, Franklin left for Philadelphia with no money and became a printer. By 1730 he owned his own business and published the Pennsylvania Gazette. He married Deborah Read and had three children.

In 1732, Franklin began publishing the annual Poor Richard's Almanac. He had many readers and became a household name. He helped to establish the first U.S. lending library (1731) and an academy that later became the University of Pennsylvania.
