Appearance

 

The Painted Butterflies have 2 sets of forewings and hindwings. Each wing has scales which make colors on their wings.The wings are symmetrical. All butterflies have 3 body parts called head, thorax and abdomen. Some caterpillars have yellowish green stripes and purple to black bodies.The caterpillars are 1.25 inches and have long spines.All butterflies have 2 antennas.They have black,brown and orange spots.Their underside is gray with white, blue and red markings. Some butterflies wing size is 2-2 7/8 inches (5.1-7.2 cm).The first 3 pairs of legs on the caterpillar are jointed and become butterfly legs. The rest disappear. They are called prolegs.
