Cortes' Journey

This is a map of the route that Cortes took when he travelled to Mexico. He landed in Veracruz, Mexico in 1519. After he landed, he burned his ships. This was to show his men that there was no turning back. Cortes and his men met with the Aztec leader, Moctezuma, when they arrived in the capital, Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City). Moctezuma greeted the men with presents and even let the men sleep in his palace. But Cortes had tricked Moctezuma. The Spaniards began to attack the Aztecs and kill them for their gold. The Aztecs were weakened by hunger and disease and finally after four months of battle, the Spaniards took over the city. The Aztec empire ended. Cortes and his men had won.
