The History
James Naismith,
1891 instructor in YMCA, wanted to find a team game
not as violent as rugby.
They used peach
baskets for hoops and in 1906 they switched to a
metal hoop. The first basketballs were soccer
balls. At first, a ladder was used to get the ball
out of baskets. A bag of braided cord netting was
attached to the hoop.
