Marco Polo's Travels

 

  • Marco Polo was 17 when he went to China in 1271 with his father and uncle.
  • The Polos went to Asia to trade.
  • The Polos stayed in China for 15 years.
  • They traveled to China, Persia, India, Burma,Vietnam, Malaysia, Sumatra and the Island of Sri Lanka.
  • They returned to Venice, Italy in 1295 after traveling over 15,000 miles.
  • They had been gone for 24 years.
  • Nobody recognized the Polos and they didn't believe their stories.
  • The Polos dressed in Chinese silks and had a big party. Then they ripped open their shirts to reveal all the jewels that they had brought back from Asia.
  • When the Polos returned Venice and Genoa were at war. Marco was captured and put into prison.
  • In prison he wrote a book called Description of the World.
  • Marco Polo died in 1324 when he was 70 years old. While on his deathbed, he said "I didn't tell half of what I saw, because no one would have believed me."
