Daily reading is very important and has a direct relationship to student's performance in school. National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), in its Fourth Grade Reading Highlights 2000, showed that "students who reported reading 11 or more pages per day scored higher than students who reported reading fewer pages daily."
The Fairfax County Public Schools Language Arts Program of Studies emphasizes the way that reading, writing, speaking, and listening are related. At Kings Park, reading instruction consists of a balance of reading experiences which include reading to children, reading with children, and reading by children. Teachers plan daily lessons and learning activities to ensure that:
- Students receive direct reading instruction based on their needs.
- Students are immersed in language and have daily opportunities to read and write.
- Reading, writing, listening, and speaking are integrated because these skills are interrelated and development in one area supports development in the others.
- Reading is taught throughout the day in all subject areas.
High-interest reading incentive programs, weekly visits to the school library, and classroom Take Home Books programs provide that important home-school link as we partner with you to build your child’s early reading and writing skills.
