Walk into a regular education classroom at Kings Park and you may very well see two teachers. Both may be leading the class in an activity, or one may be working with a small group of students within the classroom. While both teachers have the same instructional goals in mind, their approaches may be different. But the various instructional needs of the students in the classroom will be addressed. One teacher is the classroom teacher and the other is a special education teacher. This is inclusion.
The goal of inclusion is to provide students with disabilities the support and instruction they require in order to be successful in the regular classroom. Inclusion provides special education students the opportunity to learn together with their non-disabled peers. One incidental benefit of inclusion is the direct support non-disabled students receive from an additional teacher in the classroom. Kings Park continues to be committed to providing learning opportunities for special education students within the regular classroom. Inclusion works for everyone!
