There are many extra library programs during the school year. We promote and encourage reading by developing Reading Challenges during the winter and spring breaks. It is important for children to continue to read during school breaks and the school-wide challenge makes it fun. Every year our students participate in the Virginia Young Readers program where they read the nominated books and then vote for their favorite title. The children enjoy this and become very passionate about their choices all the while learning about the democratic process. There are two Book Fairs each year—one in the fall and one in the spring. The children enjoy seeing a different selection of new books and we are able to raise additional money to support the school library from a portion of the profits of the sale. The library also hosts an annual kick off to summer reading presented by the children’s staff of the Kings Park Public library at the end of the school year.
