Accommodations for parents with disabilities - The service of a sign language interpreter, oral interpreter, or cued speech translator is available to support participation in parent-teacher conferences or other school-related functions. Deaf or hard-of-hearing parents should notify the school office of the date and time of the meeting at least one week in advance.

Birthday celebrations Parents may choose to celebrate a child's birthday with a small class treat during the class lunch period. Food allergies are significant concerns, so advance planning with the teacher is essential. Treats should be pre-portioned, finger foods which do not require adult assistance to cut and supervise, like cupcakes, packaged snacks, or cookies. Delivery of balloons and gifts, clowns and strolling minstrels will not be permitted so that we can avoid interrupting instruction.
Please do not send party invitations for distribution at school. Social arrangements should be made from home to avoid hurt feelings to classmates. The PTA Student Directory published each fall provides contact information for families.

Day care (SACC)
Discipline - The Lion's Pride: Kings Park School Rules was developed by students, staff and parents to guide behavior at Kings Park School. This book, reviewed and illustrated by all Kings Park classes during the first weeks of school, serves as a reference to which individual classroom procedures and expectations are added.
Be kind to others and use good manners.
- Be polite by waiting your turn and sharing.
- Use your best language in a quiet voice at all times.
- Solve problems by talking, not by hitting.
Respect people and property.
- Respect people's privacy, personal space, and property.
- Walk quietly in the halls. Wait for passing classes and keep your group together.
- Keep the school clean and safe. Put litter in its place.
Play safely.
- Stay where your teacher can see you.
- Be a good sport by following PE safety rules on the equipment.
- Leave gravel, rocks and dangerous objects on the ground.
Make lunch enjoyable.
- Stay in your seat and raise your hand.
- Clean up after yourself.
- Eat your own food, chew with your mouth closed, and don't throw anything.
Use computers carefully.
- Keep food and magnets away from computers.
- Hold your disk by the label. Don't touch the metal part.
- Leave programs and files on the computer. Do not change the name, move or trash them.
- Only use the addresses from the Bookmark menu.
- Do not type your name, address, or telephone number into any Internet website
- An adult must be present while you are using the Internet.
Use good bathroom manners.
- Wash your hands, keep the floors dry and put paper towels in the trash can.
- Flush.
- Respect privacy; no peeking or touching.
Keep dangerous objects away from school.
- Never bring real or toy weapons to school.
- Never bring drugs, alcohol, or anything that looks like them to school.
- Never bring fireworks, caps, poppers, or explosives to school.
- An adult must bring your medicine to the clinic.
Travel to and from school safely.
- Obey all the bus safety rules you learn in class.
- Look both ways before crossing the street.
- Stay away from strangers.
Kings Park also joins other schools in the Lake Braddock pyramid in stressing four positive character traits: respect, integrity, commitment, and responsibility . The following pledge highlights the promise to demonstrate these "Jewels of the Kingdom."

Dress code
All children participating in PE and daily recess must wear gym, tennis, or running shoes designed to provide support and prevent injury. Some styles of rubber-soled footwear, such as platform or heeled sneakers, do not provide adequate stability. Slip-ons, mules, sandals, and boots also limit mobility. Children who wear these styles to school should bring a change of gym, tennis, or running shoes for active play.
All Fairfax County Public Schools students are expected to dress appropriately for a K-12 educational environment. Any clothing that interferes with or disrupts the educational environment is unacceptable. Clothing should fit, be neat and clean, and conform to standards of decency. The following clothing is prohibited:
- Clothing with language that is vulgar, discriminatory, or obscene or that promotes or depicts weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, drug paraphernalia, violence, or gang symbols
- Sagging or low-cut pants, low-cut necklines that show cleavage, tube tops, halter tops, backless blouses or blouses with only ties in the back, and clothing constructed of see-through materials.
Students not complying with this code will be asked to cover the noncomplying clothing, change clothes, or go home. Repeated infractions will result in disciplinary action.
Hats and caps, except those worn for religious reasons, should be removed upon entering the school lobby. We ask that adult visitors also remove their hats or caps.

Gifted and talented (GT) All students in kindergarten through third grade participate in a series of response lessons that have been designed to enhance creativity and critical thinking. The lessons are part of an ongoing effort to support students with emerging characteristics of giftedness and to heighten teacher awareness of the potential of each student. Differentiated services for individual students are provided for those students whose needs exceed the grade level curriculum and classroom program.
Beginning in third grade, students are given the opportunity to participate in a center-based (grades 3-6) gifted and talented program. In the center program, highly academically gifted children are served. Participants are grouped in the center for academic work but are integrated into the other activities of the school housing the center. An information session is provided each year to describe the screening and eligibility process.
Guidance counselors- The elementary guidance program supports and complements the efforts of the classroom teacher to promote student learning and social/emotional development. Counselors conduct monthly lessons with all classes on topics such as study skills, self-esteem, and friendship skills. Counselors may also work with students and small groups to address issues related to self-worth, friendship, loss or separation from loved ones, behavior, or work habits. Students may refer themselves to the counselor, or a parent or teacher may seek help in working more effectively with an individual student. Counselors also serve as resources to parents by providing strategies and linking parents with community resources.

Homework - Homework is assigned to reinforce skills already taught in the classroom or to enrich, enhance, and extend the school experience. The amount and type of work will be determined by the teacher who considers the level, maturity, and ability of the child. In kindergarten, homework typically includes a Take Home Book program to promote nightly reading, a monthly calendar of activities to be completed, and periodic projects/assignments based upon student needs and abilities. At the primary level, homework should not exceed 30 minutes.
Hours - Mondays, from 8:20 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, from 8:20 a.m. 3:00 p.m. Walkers and car riders should arrive at school no earlier than 8:05 a.m.

Progress reports - The kindergarten teacher will schedule a parent conference at the end of the first nine-week period to discuss the child's strengths and needs. Parents receive a written Kindergarten Progress Report (KPR) following the second, third, and fourth grading periods.

Safety and security - Students participate in fire and tornado drills throughout the school year. In addition, all schools have a Crisis Response Plan and Crisis Response Team to address emergencies. The following procedures are also in place:
- Only the front doors will be open for student, staff, and guest entrance. All other doors will remain locked, although panic bars will enable classes to exit from any door in an emergency.
- All visitors must obtain a visitor's badge from the school office upon leaving the lobby area. Visitors should be prepared to provide photo identification upon signing in with the receptionist.
- Parents must proceed directly to the office to sign in/sign out their children. Parents awaiting preschool sessions or school dismissal must remain in the lobby area. Parents may not proceed to a classroom, the cafeteria, or the gym without acquiring a badge and authorization from the office.
- Staff members are required to question any visitor seen without a badge in instructional areas. Suspicious individuals in the building or on school grounds will be reported immediately to the office. The Fairfax County Police Department will be notified if appropriate.
- Students may use central bathroom facilities only in groups or when accompanied by a "buddy".
- Students traveling in the building during school hours must be accompanied by a "buddy".
- Classrooms will be secured after school hours and access prohibited. Although the cafeteria and gym may be open for evening classes and clubs, the custodial staff is not authorized to allow parents and children to enter classrooms for lost and found items or forgotten homework. This policy is intended to safeguard the contents of classrooms, prevent access to confidential student records, and provide a secure work area for the evening crew.
School news On Tuesdays each student will bring home a large "Take Home Tuesday" envelope of important communications from the school and PTA. Class work will be enclosed on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, as explained at Back-to-School Night. On the last Tuesday of the month, parents will receive the KP/KG Newsletter with information and a calendar of monthly events to post on the refrigerator. Each classroom has a site on the FCPS 24-7 Learning link to post classroom news and information. Access and passwords are provided through the classroom teacher.

Special education Special education services are available to support the following conditions: autism, emotional disability, hearing impairment, mental retardation, multiple handicaps, orthopedic impairment, other health impairment, preschool developmental delays, specific learning disability, speech/language impairment, and visual impairment.
