Welcome to Kings Park

Welcome to Kings Park Elementary School! We invite you to join us in sharing the excitement of your child's primary school years. The school motto "Together We Grow" at Kings Park reflects the enthusiastic commitment to life-long learning shared by students and staff.

Kings Park's 700 students, kindergarten through grade 3, live in the Springfield-Burke communities. Kings Park Elementary School is in the Lake Braddock Secondary School pyramid. Students attend neighboring Kings Glen Elementary School for grades four through six. In grades seven through twelve, students attend Lake Braddock Secondary School.

Success by Eight:

Kings Park is one of 12 model "Success by Eight" sites in Fairfax County. "Success by Eight" schools strive to ensure that all children are successful readers, writers, mathematicians, and learners by age eight.

Components of "Success by Eight" include the use of quality early childhood practices, frequent assessment of student needs, and flexible grouping for instruction. Learning community options are available, including full day kindergarten or the option to pick up kindergartners midday, and multiage and single grade classes. Team teaching, strong family-school connections, and clear standards and benchmarks are also hallmarks of "Success by Eight" schools.

Reading, Writing, Math Emphases:

As a primary school, reading, writing, and mathematics serve as the foundation of the school program. Beginning in kindergarten, children receive direct instruction in three cueing systems-meaning, language structure, and phonics-to support growth in reading and writing skills. Throughout the primary day, varied, carefully paced lessons and activities incorporate the use of manipulatives to foster concept development and provide avenues for exploration.

Kings Park: A Model Technology School

An automated library and access to multimedia throughout the school expand opportunities for research and enhance instruction. Renovated in 1997, the Kings Park facility features Local Area Network (LAN) capability and Internet access. Each Kings Park classroom is equipped with four Macintosh computers, allowing student access to technology throughout the school day. A computer lab of Macintosh computers supports large group instruction.

Special Programs

As a Professional Development School allied with George Mason University, Kings Park staff serve as clinical faculty members and train graduate level interns in early childhood methods and curriculum. College courses are offered on-site.

A Bruin Buddy program links Kings Park students with teen mentors from Lake Braddock Secondary School.

To support beginning readers, the Kings Park reading specialist and other staff members provide instruction in Reading Recovery strategies.

A variety of integrated special education service options enable staff to focus on individual student needs. Learning disabilities specialists, speech/language clinicians, an occupational therapist, and a physical therapist are based at Kings Park.

An on-site preschool program provides early intervention to students, ages 2-5, who demonstrate developmental delays.

Opportunities for Family Involvement

Through frequent family events and curriculum workshops, parents are encouraged to share their children's primary school experience. In addition to Back-to-School Nights, traditional Kings Park events include:

  • Family curriculum nights
  • PTA socials
  • Grade level musical performances
  • PE field days

An active Kings Park/Kings Glen PTA provides strong support for the instructional program. The PTA sponsors cultural arts programs and assemblies, field trips, and after-school enrichment programs. Parents are encouraged to volunteer in classrooms, in the school library, and on PTA committees. PTA representatives join staff in serving on the Kings Park School Steering Committee.

Services for Students

Bus transportation to and from school is provided for all students who live more than one mile from Kings Park School. In addition, bus transportation is provided for all kindergartners midday at the change of morning and afternoon sessions.

Breakfast, lunch, and beverages are available for student purchase in the school cafeteria. Menus are issued monthly. Parents may send money daily or open cafeteria account cards for their children. Deposits may be made weekly, biweekly, monthly or quarterly.

A clinic room aide is available daily to provide modified first aid and to administer prearranged medication.

A School Age Child Care Center (SACC) operated by the County of Fairfax offers before and after school child care on-site. Kings Park SACC operates from 7:15 a.m. until 6:15 p.m. For information, call the Office for Children at 449-8989.

Guiding Future Citizens

At Kings Park, primary students are encouraged to assume a variety of leadership positions:
  • Student Hosts to welcome new classmates
  • Cub Council representatives
  • Cub Patrols at arrival and dismissal
  • TV station KPOV (Kids' Point of View) anchors and reporters
  • Wee Deliver in-house postal system supervisors

Student Hosts introduce a new student to Mrs. Frydenlund.
THE LION'S PRIDE, a primary-sized book of school rules, stresses responsibility and respect for self, classmates, and adults.

Kings Park Is My School!

The majestic lion, and regal purple (Kings) and bright green (Park) represent Kings Park Elementary School. Students and staff are encouraged to wear one or both school colors on Kings Park Spirit Day, the first Friday of each month.

The following school song is a favorite.

Kings Park is my school. Look and you will find
Lots of friends I'm glad to say are mine.
There's learning and playing and much, much more!
You will feel so welcome when you come through our door!

Here we all practice responsibility.
We care and share and try to be the best that we can be!
Our parents, our teachers, our principals too
Help us to discover all the things that we can do.
