KINGS PARK SPEECH

The speech and language program at Kings Park Elementary School serves children in the non-categorical Preschool program and grades Kindergarten through grade three. At the beginning of each school year the speech and language clinicians screen all Kindergarten students and students in grades 1-3 who are new to Fairfax County. Throughout the school year, the clinicians monitor students for developmental progress in articulation and language skills. Diagnostic evaluations are conducted on students who are identified through a screening process. Therapy services are delivered a variety of ways depending on what is educationally appropriate for each individual child. Some children are served in their language arts time block in collaboration with their learning resource teachers. Other children receive small group or individual therapy as needed. Preschool children are also served in the classroom and small group and individual sessions. A collaborative approach with other services, such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, special education teachers, and vision and hearing itinerants, as well as the classroom teachers is utilized. Children who receive services may be working on a variety of deficit areas including articulation, voice, fluency, concept and language development, and phonemic awareness skills.
