Interstate Van Lines Field Trip

Third graders arrived at Interstate Van Lines early one morning. The sign out front even said,
"Welcome Kings Park School"!

Scott, the fleet supervisor, told the students all about taking care of the large fleet of trucks that Interstate owns. They were even putting new decals on a truck while we were there. All of the trucks that work with Kings Park will have a special "Kings Park Rolls With Interstate" decal on the window.

Next, Scott told the students about the 53 foot tractor trailer. They were very impressed that it held 200 gallons of fuel but only got 5 miles to the gallon. He also said that cars, boats and trailers are sometimes loaded into the trucks.

Of course, everyone wanted to get into the driver's seat. We needed a ladder to climb up to the seat. Here are Marian and Janet enjoying the view. There are so many buttons in the cab of the truck. But the most interesting part was the bedroom behind the driver.

These large trucks have a place for the driver to sleep. This truck has a TV, VCR and even gets cable TV via satellite. See where the driver has hung his clothing? The driver needs to leave his truck running while he's asleep in order to get air conditioning or heat.

Mrs. Rabbu is considering another career after teaching. She looks right at home in the cab of this truck.

Next, we checked out all the packing supplies. Jennifer told us that there are many different kinds of papers and boxes. The king-size mattress box was impressive.

The warehouse facility is very large. Each of these containers is 7 feet tall and they are stacked three containers high. On top, there are sofas and large furniture. Downstairs there is a vault where items like pianos are kept at a certain temperature.

Interstate has its own training house for movers. The walls and sofas even talk. Here, packers learn how to do their job.

One end of the training house leads to a pretend front yard where an Interstate truck is parked. Martin showed us how the movers learn to stay on the sidewalk and to load boxes into the truck properly.

After our tour, it was lunchtime. Pizza and drinks were provided by Interstate for all participants.

One group of lucky third graders was also filmed by News Channel 8, another business partner. A short clip was shown on the evening news featuring our project "Kings Park Rolls With Interstate."
