Empower Girls is
an after school program started by Eileen Ellsworth
with a community action grant from the American
Association of University Women. The program is
designed to teach girls the computer skills they
will need in the future while making them
comfortable with the technology. The program
originally started in the Springhill and Reston
Teen Center and expanded to county schools. The
program continues to grow in schools in the county
including Kings Glen.
The girls have
the opportunity for some hands-on activities with
computer software, hardware, and the Internet. They
learn Microsoft PowerPoint and create a
presentation to share with the group. Each girl
works on a club logo for the group T-shirts with
one selected to be put on everyone's shirt. Thye
make necklaces with computer language beads and
learn about the binary system. Participants take
apart a computer and learn about what's inside and
create newsletters in Microsoft Word. They also
conduct an Internet scavenger hunt searching for
such things as the most popular Crayola Crayon
color and the weather in Tokyo, Japan. Thirty
participants are chosen on a first come, first
serve basis to attend one ten week session meeting
from 3:00 to 5:00 once a week.
