SOL's start this week!
Parents are reminded that students test better when they are prepared physically and emotionally. FCPS' Family and School Partnerships share these tips for test takers from The Parent Institute: don't stay up late—get plenty of rest during test weeks—and eat healthy meals to keep mind and body nourished.
International Night May 18th from 6:30 – 8:00 at Kings Glen
Experience the cultures and traditions of countries from around the world in
our schools! This fun-filled event includes displays celebrating the cultural
heritages of our students, crafts from around the world, Dance Corporales,
Irish Step dancing, Korean Fan dancers and more.
We are looking for families to host country information tables, including a
display of items to represent your heritage. This is a wonderful way for our
children to share their background. Please contact Wei Smith at kgkpintlnight@gmail.com with questions, ideas and to volunteer!
SOL Practice Items
SOL Practice Items provide examples of the new content and increased rigor represented by the revised Standards of Learning (SOL) and illustrate the new Technology-Enhanced Item types for the mathematics, reading, science, and writing SOL tests. Technology-Enhanced Items (TEI) require students to indicate their responses in ways other than a multiple-choice format. http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/practice_items/index.shtml

New Mathematics SOLs this year.
New mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL) were adopted by Virginia in 2009, implemented during the 2011-12 school year, and assessed for the first time this spring. Initial data indicates that changes in Virginia's new mathematics SOL assessments are resulting in lower pass rates for students across the state.
Questions on the new SOL tests reflect increased rigor to more closely assess student's critical thinking and problem solving skills. Many concepts are now being taught at an earlier grade level than in previous years. For example, some topics previously taught in grade 5 are now taught in grade 4. For students taking the test online, the new assessments include technology-enhanced questions. Simpler multiple-choice questions have been replaced by problems that require students to apply multiple strategies to solve prior to deciding on an answer.
Lower test scores are common when new standards and assessments are introduced, and we are confident scores will rebound as students and teachers become more familiar with the changes. Over the long term, these changes will have a positive impact on student achievement by raising expectations for all.
Since the beginning of the school year, our teachers have been preparing our students for the more rigorous tests. Parents can view narrated demonstrations of the new test items, online SOL practice tests, and grade level content reviews to help their children prepare for the tests by visiting http://www.fcps.edu/is/news/mathsol.shtml

School Board Shortens School Year
The School Board has approved a revision to the 2011-12 school year calendar since FCPS has used only one of its three weather-related makeup days. At its April 12 regular meeting, the board voted to schedule the last day of school for Friday, June 15 (a full day), rather than on Tuesday, June 19. The Board has now reassigned June 18 and 19 as teacher workdays, and June 20 remains the teacher checkout day. However, if any unforeseen emergency closings should be required, schools may require make-up days. For details on the agenda item, please visit http://www.boarddocs.com/vsba/fairfax/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=8T3CUY32C99F
