We study Virginia history and geography in fourth grade, and we are fortunate to have history at our doorsteps. If you have the opportunity, plan family field trips to visit some of the interesting historic sites of Virginia that will enhance your child's study of our state.

This list includes some of the interesting sites nearby.

 

Mount Vernon
• home of George and Martha Washington

George Washington's Grist Mill
• located between Mount Vernon and Woodlawn Plantation

Woodlawn Plantation
• home of Nelly Custis (Martha Washington's granddaughter) and Lawrence Lewis
(George Washington's nephew)

Pohick Church
• George Washington, among other famous northern Virginians, attended services here.

Gunston Hall
• home of George Mason, author of the Virginia Bill of Rights

Fairfax Courthouse
• The first session of court was held in this building in 1800.
• George Washington, George Mason, and other prominent northern Virginians
 served as justices here.

Legato School
• Relocated to its site in front of the Massey Building, on Route 123 in Fairfax City
 to preserve an example of a one room schoolhouse.

Great Falls Park
• View the spectacular falls and learn about George Washington's attempt to
 construct the Potomack Canal to enable boats to bypass the falls in the river

Luray Caverns

Claude Moore Colonial Farm
• Volunteers work a small farm to show how "poor" farmers of the18th century would   have lived.

Dranesville Tavern
• located on the south side of Route 7 at Dranesville

Colvin Run Mill
• shows the working of a gristmill

Sully Plantation
• home of Richard Bland Lee, northern Virginia's first congressman

If you are able to travel a little farther, the following are some of Virginia's interesting places to visit.

Jamestown
• See a re-creation of the Algonquin Indian village and the Jamestown settlement which
 was the first permanent English settlement (includes the fort and replicas of the 3 ships).

Williamsburg
• Visit many interesting sites in a restoration of Virginia's colonial capital.

Yorktown
• This is the site of the British surrender to American and French armies that marked the     end of the Revolutionary War.

Monticello
• the remarkable home of Thomas Jefferson

Montpelier
• home of James Madison

Shirley Plantation
• the oldest surviving plantation in Virginia

Berkeley Plantation
• birthplace of two presidents, Benjamin Harrison and William Henry Harrison

Sherwood Forest Plantation
• home of John Tyler

Skyline Caverns

Natural Bridge

Pamunkey Indian Reservation
• "a living memory of Powhatan's People"

Mattaponi Indian Reservation
• also off Route 30E near the Pamunkey Reservation
