The fifth grade science program is an activity based curriculum designed to provide students with a basic understanding of Earth and space, life, and physical science concepts. They are to apply learned knowledge, conduct experiments, record information, and make connections to science in our everyday life. The materials include activity centered units, science trade books, and video discs. They will learn to manipulate materials, investigate scientific problems, and develop questioning strategies. Specific units of study include: Small Things which introduces the students to the world of microscopes, Pendulums, Landforms, Constellations, and the Energy of Light and Sound. All fifth grade classes will visit West Springfield High School Planetarium as part of the study of the stars and constellations.
