Welcome to Sam Elson, new principal at Kings Glen Elementary School. Mr. Elson comes to Kings Glen from Vienna Elementary, where he was assistant principal. He was also previously the band teacher at Kings Glen, so we are thrilled to welcome him back to the Glen.
Kings Glen Elementary was established in 1969 as the first grade four through grade six elementary school in Fairfax County and has remained in partnership with Kings Park Elementary (kindergarten through grade three) ever since. Our school theme, "Building A Positive School Community: A Family Affair", serves as a constant reminder that it is the collective responsibility of students, teachers, and parents to: expect academic excellence; reinforce character and values; appreciate multiculturalism and tolerance; and foster improved self-concept, school climate and academic achievement.
Kings Glen students support the building of a positive school community by striving to be continuously caring, routinely respectful, highly honest, and really responsible.
The Mission of Kings Glen Elementary School is based on the belief that all students can learn. The entire staff is committed to setting high standards for student achievement within a caring, supportive environment that is conducive to the development of sound character and values. We consistently provide students with a safe learning environment as well as foster acceptance and respect for individual differences. Kings Glen educators also strive to stimulate intellectual curiosity and independent thinking, while preparing students for life in a global society.
Our mission to build a positive school community is accomplished through child-centered self-contained classrooms and the delivery of a concept-based curriculum for students in grades four through six. Reading, writing, and problem solving are emphasized throughout the curriculum, and all students are challenged to reach their academic potential in each curriculum area. Any students who are academically at-risk in reading, writing, and/or mathematics receive additional support planned by their teachers. The curriculum is coordinated by teachers within grade levels under the leadership of team leaders with the assistance and support of specialists who serve students with special needs.
Kings Glen faculty and staff believe that technology is a vital and necessary part of student learning. As such, it is our objective to provide students access to a wide range of available material and to develop technological proficiencies that will prepare students for future success.
Through the latest in technology, students are provided with:
rapidly processed information;
opportunities to enhance communication skills;
numerous visual representations; and
the instructional feedback necessary to stimulate intellectual curiosity and independent thinking while preparing them for life in a global society.
After school and in school programs are also an integral part of the Kings Glen experience. Sponsored and supported through the generosity of the Kings Glen/ Kings Park PTA, programs offered include the chess club, dramatics with the Kings' Jesters, sport and sportsmanship with the All Stars, art with the Gator Creators, and dance/movement with the Kings' dancers. During school students participate in band, strings, and chorus as well as SCA, patrols, SWAT, and the morning news crew. All programs enhance the school experience and foster an excitement for being in school.
Parents and members of the Kings Glen community play an active and important role building a positive school community. They provide academic support and cultural enrichment through an active parent volunteer program that involves numerous parents on any given day. Parents also have played an active role in the development of our School Plan and they continue to actively serve on each of our School Plan committees. All parents are welcome to visit the children in the classroom or for lunch. All visitors should step in the school office for a visitor's badge. Visits to children's classrooms should be arranged in advance as a courtesy to the teacher so he/she may let you know what is planned during the time you intend to visit.
On behalf of all members of the entire Kings Glen Elementary school community, thank you for visiting our web site. I encourage you to visit it often to learn about the wonderful adventures in learning going on at Kings Glen.
