Are you aware that
Fairfax County Public Schools anticipates having to face a budget deficit of $100 to $200 million for FY 2011 (next school year)? During the FY 2010 budget cycle (current school year), FCPS closed a budget deficit of $200 million.
The proposed budget for next year includes a class size increase of one student, the elimination of the Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools (FLES) program, general education summer school, all high school freshman sports, and reductions in other sports programs. Pimmit Hills Alternative High School will be closed and its students sent to other schools or programs in FCPS. The central offices will cut five percent in 2011 bringing the total cuts to 20 percent over the past three years. Nearly 600 positions will be eliminated, including 81 in the central offices that provide support to schools. Unfortunately, for the second year in a row, the proposed budget includes no salary increases for employees.
There are now new fees for athletic participation, AP/IB/PSAT test fees, and an increase in the fees charged in our buildings for community use. We also expect that we will be able to increase rental revenues from monopoles or cell phone towers on our school properties.
To prevent more damaging cuts, Dr. Dale is recommending that the Fairfax Board of Supervisors increase the county transfer by $57.8 million dollars to preserve full day kindergarten, elementary band and strings, elementary foreign language immersion and further class size increase for general and advanced academic classrooms. If we do not get the additional funding, these programs will be considered for elimination.
The Board of Supervisors adopts the Fairfax County Budget on April 27 and then the FCPS School Board adopts the FCPS Budget on May 20, so we are a few months away from a final budget. You are free to testify at the School Board and Board of Supervisor Public Hearings. Here is the timeline:
February 4 School Board Adopts FY 2011 Advertised Budget
February 23 County Executive Releases FY 2011 Advertised County Budget
March 9 County Board of Supervisors Advertises Tax Rate
April 6-8 County Board of Supervisors Budget Public Hearings
April 6 School Board presents budget to County BOS
April 27 County BOS approves County Budget, tax rate resolution and transfer amount to schools
May 11 & 12 School Board Budget Public Hearings (Jackson Middle School)
May 13 School Board Budget Work Session (Gatehouse
May 20 School Board adopts Approved Budget
