Mrs. Appling knew from age
six, when her play was setting up “class” for five siblings and
the neighbor kids, that she would become a teacher. It wasn't until
college at Emory University and Georgia State University that she
knew she wanted to teach English. She delights in sharing with young
people her love for words, books of all genres, and the creative
process of writing. In 24 years of teaching, she's worked with grades
K-12 in rural and inner-city Georgia; in private and public schools
of Uganda, Kenya, Swaziland, and the Sudan; and in Virginia private
and public schools. This is her 9th year teaching English on Kilmer's
Comet Team.
Mrs. Appling's home is in Vienna with her husband Hugh, a software
engineer. She has three sons: Damon, the Services Manager at Norfolk's
TownPoint Club; Douglas, a musician and composer; and Benjamin,
a sophomore at the College of William and Mary. Besides reading
and writing for her own pleasure, Mrs. Appling enjoys hiking the
Appalachian Trail , folk dancing, making pies, and growing flowers
and vegetables.
